A little help - 942 Axis or Sebenza?

Well I own a 710 axis lock and i've played with every other axis lock that benchmade has made(i worked in a knife store until just recently and sitll go in there quite a bit) and i've played with quite a few Sebenzas. I personally think that the 942's handle is to thin for myself its just akward. And also with the Sebenza you can get some custom design on the handle, which i would suggest, it really personalizes it. Like i like to swing dance so i would like to eventually get a large sebenza with a zoot suit hat etched in blue on the handle. plus the quality of the Sebenza is just the best

Fred said," Like comparing a Nissan to a Mercedes. Sebenza is the Mercedes."

'teacher' says, "I have a friend who has a Mercedes that 'lives' in the repair shop. My Nissan just keeps on going and going."

Both are good knives without a doubt. If price alone makes one better than the other, then go for the obvious choice; just like w/ the auto brands mentioned.

If however you consider quality and function in deciding what is 'good', either one is OK.

I can do anything w/ my 940 that I need to do. I feel I get more 'bang for my buck' w/ it. This is not to say the sebbie is not good,IT IS. It should be, to buy one will cost at least three times as much as the 942.

So to compare the two as equal as far as pricing goes seems a bit unfair to me.
Why not compare value for dollar spent??????
On second thought, even that would be silly.

They are two different knives in two different price ranges. Choose for yourself, they are both 'good'.

We all can't afford a Mercedes and would not really want one anyway.......

The only way to really tell is to do a side by side comparison. You may love the Axis Lock, but the overall balance of the knife is not what you are looking for. The Sebi will lock up like a vault every time, but it may not feel good in your hand. I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture.

Before buying my Sebenza, I did a side by side comparison with two Benchmade Axis Lock models (sorry, I don't know which model #s) and because I am a Microtech fan, a SOCOM Elite. Initially, I liked all the models, and they all felt like they were put together well, fit my hand well, and had good balance.
After some closer observation, I found some things about EACH knife that I did not like.

The Microtech seemed a little large for my personal tastes and I didn't care for the design of the Microbar lock (again, a personal opinion).

The Benchmades were a little off-centered when closed, and the blades wiggled a bit when locked open.

The Sebenza was EXPENSIVE the thumblug really bit into my thumb, and it had this extra hole in the handle (no practical purpose).

After even more time spent comparing the knives, I finally decided on the Sebenza because:

It exudes quality manufacturing.

IMO it had the best lockup.

Fit my hand and had the best balance.

I liked the shape and grind on the blade.

Attention to detail i.e. radiusing (sp?) the top edge of the blade, centered blade, no blade wiggle, etc.

These other reasons made me feel better about the making the purchase:

You can take it apart without voiding the warranty.

Legendary customer support.

Go with the side by side. Its the only way you can figure out which one is the best for your needs.

Aloha

BigHonu makes some good points that seem very unbiased.

I have 4 versions of the 940/942 and all of them are perfect in fit and finish. They lock up tight w/ no blade wobble at all.

Just my experience though. I love them. To me they are like an extension of my hand. Balanced perfectly for my needs.

Good advice from BH though: find out what works for YOU>>>>>>>>>

I have both and like them both, but I carry my small Sebenza every day.
