A little help choosing a spyderco?

I will preface this post by saying I don't really need another knife. Ok, now that I've got that out of the way...:D

I have recently weened my spydercos down to just a few. I sold my green pm2 and gave my dragonfly salt to a fishing buddy. So now I am left with a ti Millie, se pacific salt, orange dodo and I have an aqua salt waiting on me when I get home. That's the current lineup.

So, I will be in the states all next week and plan to make a trip to knifeworks, which is near my fathers house. I've been trying to make a short list of spydercos I would consider buying and thought it would be good to listen to suggestions from some of you who have handled more spydercos than I have.

Right now I am very happy with everything I own. My edc is the military unless I'm doing really dirty work or I'm going to be on the ocean, then it's the pacific salt. The dodo I carry as a second knife sometimes, like I used to carry my dragonfly. The aqua will get mounted in the kayak. If I am going to add anything, it needs to be something I will actually use, otherwise I just won't enjoy owning it. I've considered a second military or a superblue endura since I like both those platforms, but that seems kind of redundant. I don't know, that's why I'm asking for suggestions. I have always gravitated towards either large or small folders. I never really got into the mid size 3" blades that most people like, but I'm not opposed to considering them.

Here's a list of a few I'm thinking to look at.

1. Another blackout plain jane pm2 (haven't even shipped mine yet and already have a bit of sellers remorse, haha)
2. I want to check out spydercos flippers. Domino and southard.
3. A g10 Millie.
4. The delica.
5. Sage series.
6. Another salt knife (probably a se tasman)
7. Fixed blades like street beat and street Bowie.

Ok that's what I can think of for now. Probably the most practical knife in the list that I know would get used is the tasman salt so I'm leaning in that direction but I'm open to any and all suggestions!

I'd love to look at a m4 military too while I'm in the u.s. but I don't think those are available anywhere but on the secondary market. Correct?

Your list is full of great knives varying in price qute a bit along with dimensions. You can not really go wrong with any. I would look at the Domino and Sage series first along with the Para 2. The Delica is always a good sized EDC.

Personally, I've really fallen hard for my Southard. I love the blade shape, the flipping action is great, the steel is a workhorse and it fits my hand perfectly. I've replaced the god awful pocket clip and I'm getting a new scale made for it, and after that it may be the perfect EDC for me. I think I remember you having some issues with sharpening CTS-204P in the past though, correct? Or were those problems a thing of the past after getting diamond rods for the sharpmaker? The diamond rods are almost a requirement.

If you like small knives and like titanium due to living in a humid area near the sea, have you considered a Techno?

I wish the M4 military was readily available. When they appear on the secondary market they get snatched up really quickly as well. It's become a Spyderco grail of sorts. I'm pretty sure it was a Knifeworks exclusive actually, so if you are going there see if you can talk the owner into doing another run!

The way you use knives I would look at;

- the Manix 2 I think you will be amazed at the value and ergonomics of that knife and it is very robust. I really wasn't interested in it until I handled one, then I understood why it is such a popular model in the line up.

- I have a Domino, I like it but I think you would find it to fancy I would think the Southard there.

- The Caly 3.5 is an awfully nice knife.

- Native 5 is an amazing small knife very robust, very ergonomic, like the blade shape and FFG.

- Large Sebenza Insingo if you feel like breaking the bank, your there you might as well look right :)

Maybe a Gayle Bradley. I think selling the green PM2 was a mistake personally.

How can you say that for sure? What if I got $5,000 for it?? :D ;). Seriously though, I hear ya, but honestly, I preferred my s30v version. I'm sure I'm in the minority with that opinion, but I find I enjoy working with s30v over 204p. And to syncharmony, yes, I finally got familiar enough with the steel that I could put a really good edge on it, but I just find s30v to be a better balance for me. I do want to check out the southard. If they had a different steel model (say xhp) I would probably choose it, but the fact that it has 204p does not rule it out. In other words, cts204p certainly isn't my favorite steel, but I don't hate it.

Also, I checked out the techno last time I was there. I love the looks and the idea, but just didn't care for how it felt in hand.

I guess if you are an S30V fan then that was not a mistake for you. Especially if you made a little money on it. I am not a fan of S30V. Probably my least favorite steel actually. I waited for the green Para 2 to grab my first Para, and waited for the gray CRUWEAR Military for my first Military because I did not want S30V. Different strokes. I hear you on the Techno though, I handled one when they first came out and just didn't like it. I would like to try it again just to see if my tastes have changed.

The Gayle Bradley though, is awesome. M4 is sweet, it would need to be your non-water knife though.

Sage 1 or CF Caly 3.5

You need something a bit different and more classy.

Domino and Southard are also great. And get a G10 S30V PM2 since you know you will sooner or later ;)

You really need a smaller more dressy blade imo. Domino, sage 1 or the new sage 3 would all be great......

Have you thought about the kw exclusive brown fen native?

Since you passed on my awesome idea for a JD Smith ;) I'll go with...the nilakka...or centofante...I think something slicey is next on the list! :D

Or the stretch...then again...flipper fun with the domino might be a nice change of pace...

oh heck...fill up a basket and get 'em all!! :D

Oof...I'm in big trouble! You know how I know I'm in big trouble?? You guys are all over the board with your suggestions and I haven't heard a bad one yet! Haha.

One thing I didn't mention is I've been wanting to try some new steel. I like my s30v just fine but I really haven't tried much else. I've never tried it, but I have a sneaky suspicion that I would really like vg10. I like to touch my users up daily and keep a razor edge on them so a steel that is easy to sharpen and will take a fine edge is right up my alley. From what I've heard vg10 is a pretty good steel for that. Others I was considering are m4, superblue, and xhp....and anything else you guys tell me I have to have! ;).

This sounds like a job for Super Blue!

Only problem is that only narrows it down to:

Caly 3
Caly 3.5
Endura
Delica
Stretch
Dragonfly
Manbug?

Granted, some of these aren't out yet and the others can all be hard to find...

I like the idea of trying some superblue. For some reason I don't really care for the look of the laminated blades though. Are the caly knives the only ones that aren't laminated? A superblue dragonfly would be pretty sweet since I just gave mine away!

Oof! I just looked at the super blue dragonfly. It's not laminated is it?? That's my knife! Is it not out yet?? :(.

Only the Caly's were full SB (& G-10). The frn model are all laminate. I really want the Caly 3, but trying to hold off as I already have the SB Stretch on pre-order.

Correct, the Dfly is not out yet either.

The CRUWEAR Military is another keen edge steel. Very tough, easy to touch up and gets very sharp. It sounds like a non SS is in order. I am liking the keen edge tough steels more and more.

Yeah only the Caly's. It's a damn shame because the beautiful patina is lost on a laminated knife. I realize it's easier to maintain as a user, but we have so many other options to pick from. I wish they just let the superblue be free and naked on all the sprint versions. As it is, I have resigned myself to trying and track down a Caly 3.5 superblue since I really want to experience it in all it's glory.

With your current line up, i would definitely go with a mid size knife for your casual EDC.
- Domino
- Sage 1/2
- Native 5

I am definitely considering another Millie, and yes I kind of like the idea of a non stainless. The only problem I have with the cruwear is I really haven't seen that much feedback yet from users. I had several opportunities to buy one new and I held off because I wanted to see some testing and feedback before I bought that steel. Well now they are a bit more expensive so I might as well wait on the testing. Doesn't make sense to pay the extra $$ until the consensus is in. Sounds like I can count you as a  on the steel huh? :D
