Ok yall, my bro and I are just about ready to make our first knives out of a saw blade. i was wondering what you think of the design we came up with.? do we need to do something to it, or leave it alone..?

the first is a hunter pattern: total length-7 1/4 in, blade-3 1/4

the second is a short skinner: total length 6 1/2 in, blade-2 1/2in

the third is a skinner, with a bit longer blade and simple handle: total length 7in, blade 2 3/4in.

we would really appreciate any input on the design, something that looks good, something that should be changed for some reason, etc... There is something i just do not like about the handles though, dont know what??? my bro likes the laynard hole, i would prefer something that looks more "rugged" i guess is the term.
Thank you

As far as design goes, dug out my copy of the Lloyd Harding CD i recieved from Reg Ellery a year or so back to trace out a couple of templates today, If you'll PM me your address I can burn off a copy and send it to you, theres a few hundred different knives on there to be printed off as templates so there should be something to suit. and seeing all the myriad shapes and workign out what you like and don't like helps crystallise your own preferences and aids your own design.

I appreciate the quick replies. Thank you
we are ready to get started, I have a mental picture of what i want, I just hope it turns out that way.
Kiwi i would appreciate alot.

you want to grind a blade, you should be able to do it in your sleep.
well I'm exaggerating a little, but that's about how it is.
Grind a pile of junk and throw it away.
Or use it for testing? your blades.

You will be better off in the long run. trust me.

Perfect your skill's at the machine, master the machine.
Being good as is possible?

keep posting.

Those are great designs. I really like that top one. The only thing I would change is the pin at the rear of the handle looks a little off center.

Go for it! Have some fun and make some knives. And don't forget to let us know how you're doing.

Pintail, you'll have to send me a new PM if you've already sent your address by PM, I went to check my user CP to make sure any PM would get through and found the emial addy PMs are sent to set as my old University addy I haven't used for a couple of years. It's now set to my Yahoo.

Sorry 'bout that.

I really like top and bottom designs. Nice work. Just my 5c worth: If you make your own design you will feel a greater sense of accomplishment when the knife is finished that if you just copy someone elses template. I think they look great. You can always tweak and make adjustments (some) while you are cutting out the blank. Good luck.

PS How did you put pictures in the post?

To me the second pin needs to move forward considerably on each picture. Measure the distance between the pin near the ricasso and the thong, cut in half, and mark your middle pin at that distance.

Welcome to the forums.

The designs look fine. Build them and see how they come out. Don't plan on being satisfied with the first few you make, hopefully, you won't be.
Most knife makers are not satisfied with there work. They just plug along.

Good luck, Fred
