A little humiliation is a good thing

It is good to learn from your mistakes. It is better to learn from the mistakes of others and that is what this forum is all about.

There is no such thing as "cheating" when it comes to wilderness survival. It is a one time pass/fail test. Anyone who hasn't had their butt kicked by nature hasn't spent enough time in it. With fire making it is a good training exercise to go out in bad fire conditions and work at it until you have fire. The paradox is that when you need a fire the most it is the hardest to make and when you don't need one at all you could start one by accident. In dry season in Central Brazil you could start a brushfire by randomly striking a ferro rod. In rainy season I have used up entire candles cooking kindling dry.

In your survival kit you should always have a bombproof instant fire ready to go. I carry a trioxene bar in my kit and I have used it to save myself from hypothermia. Mac
