Hi Guys

I've been hit fairly recently by the Schrade bug and managed to track down this Buzzsaw trapper

Schrade970T_zpsece5fec4.jpg

odd thing is I always though these were carbon steel but the blade is marked stainless - could someone give me a little info

mainly interested to know what the steal might be

Where do you see a stainless mark Corso? A SCHRADE+ stamp indicates stainless steel. Just SCHRADE usually indicates carbon steel.

thats what I though but it has the word stainless on the back of the blade

seems to have old henry scales so i was wondering if it was an end of line make up?

What is is about this site that prohibits you from posting pictures Koldgold? If you can post it on AAPK you can post it here, I just did.

Do you have picture of the back of the knife Corso? Is stainless etched or stamped? Uncle Henry Scales...

There are the regular saw cut delrin 97OT with pick and tweezers, as well as some single blade 97OT with yellow handles. This particular blade made the rounds... :D

I have just looked at the Duck knives I have and they do not have anything stamped on the back of the blades.
Have a look at this one in Australia on eBay: 221182848844
I have the regular saw cut delrin 97OT with pick and tweezers.

You knife shwn is stamped "SCHRADE" no SCHRADE+
I have found "SCHRADE+" blades in some of my 2000 - 2003 DUCK nives with the wooden handles.
Most of the early blade have a smaller stamping.
Where is the stainless stamp on your knife?

for the price I paid I wouldn't mind if its a new China made schrade - I'm just curious about the steel

I've read it could be 440A or 420HC?

Interesting. I haven't seen any other OT blades with a "stainless" stamp.

I think there's a 50/50 chance whether that blade is actually stainless or carbon. ;)

Schrade was making running changes on Old Timer blades to stainless during their last few years, mostly without noting in on advertising, packaging or tangs. Perhaps a SFO customer (such as SMKW or DU) for whom that knife was intended originally requested that marking and the UH style covers. Or the components may have come together between July and October of 2004 as an "End Of Days" knife. Nice, whatever it's provenence.

1st time I've seen one stamped like that too with STAINLESS on the back tang.

So does anyone think its worth keeping mint or should i use it as i intended to?

Hi Corso,
I would put it away and find another nice Schrade knife to use.
I have a collection of Schrade knives from 1965 to 2004.
After Schrade closed down, I started to collect knives made between 2000 and 2004. Some for just $1 each, that came in lots of 10.
It has taken me years to find some of the late knives, even the knives Schrade had made in China took years to find.
Knives made in 2004 are very hard to find now. Some of my sample knives that did not make it to prodution almost never come up for sale .

Until you find more information about that knife, keep it... Ken

I'd keep it unused. Even if not especially valuable, it's obviously a very unusual specimen. IMO it's a mis-matched "end of days" knife assembled in 2004 in the last weeks/days/hours before the doors were locked.

I went to a gun show today and the only knife I really looked at was the UH two blade trapper (no saw). It was nice and minty, but I put it back when I saw the $60 price tag, no box or papers. Maybe I am just getting price sensitive in my old age. Or maybe I need to sell some Schrades. Anyone need a half dozen LB-7's?

but its screaming use me instead of that VIC Alox farmer :D

so now I need to go and find a two blade trapper with a saw - realy didn't want a new MIC 'Schrade' though

now you are just being mean! tempting us with a half dozen LB 7's. oh the thought of what they are!

Actually, I was joking. But not. I have a list of well over 100 Schrades and other brands I need to sell soon. But I don't have a camera at the moment and people want/deserve to see what they are being offered, so it may be a while before they go up in the exchange. And yes, at least two of those six "elbees" are what a collector of the pattern might consider desirable. Sorry to hijack with off topic chatter. There is not a buzzsaw trapper in the mix.

These buzzsaw trappers, especially the original 97OT saw cut Delrin model with both blades, including a saw blade, with the tweezers and pick, and a leather sheath, are hard to find for even the ending retail price of $47.95. If you ended up using the one you have with the Staglon covers Corso, it would not be the end of the world.

Corso I'd use it, that's what it was made for. You've got an OT blade in UH haft with no shield, it's not something that's so unusual that it'll rocket in value, plus most folks'll asume it's a repair knife. If you want a nice collectible piece save the money you'd have spent on another user and put it towards an older Schrade Walden Uncle Henry with box and paperwork.

Eric
