A little Kgalagadi Desert - Africa for you

Some images my wife took .....

Here you can see the braai in full swing ......

Kgalagadi086.jpg

A close up of a community spider web ...they are the size of grains of sand and when the area is depleted they cast a silk strand and float away. Highest encountered living organism found at 30 000ft when their launch went wrong ;D

Kgalagadi059.jpg

And some beauty even in this harsh terrain. You may nnore some dunes are white and some are very red ..... the red is iron xide in high consentrations found in the sand .....

Kgalagadi064.jpg

This is the break for lunch ...yes, we also sought our shade ...it was well past 115F by now ...

Kgalagadi078.jpg

And no trip is complete wiothout the ablutions taken into account :D

Very enjoyable pictures of a place I will likely never see. Thank you for taking us along on your journey.

Beautiful photos! I love your posts from Africa, thanks for sharing! The shot of the moon and tree is a fantastic view.

Beautiful pictures, beautiful country, although I wouldn't want to be there. Anything above 72 degrees F. is too hot for me.

Thanks for sharing, Aubrey.

We finished the trail at about 40 miles north of Nossob and made our way to Bitterpan. Just a 2000ft square dry salt pan. But heaven for my wife ..... real bed and showers. Still no hair dryer but things were looking up. Here are the bungalows at Bitterpan

We left the next morning after breakfast on our way to the Kalahari Tented Camp just outside Mata-Mata. On the way there we drove through a dune with hunderds of Tsamas ....these water melon type fruits are eaten by the Bushmen and Gemsbuck alike for the 97% water content. I tried one ...... little bitter but will do if you are thirsty.

We arrived at the Kalahari Camp which is a tented camp. Hot in the day but then we are away, driving looking for game and nice and cool at night.

It even had a dedicated kithcen and man, did I miss my wife's cooking so she spoiled me. Here is the kitchen.

The next few days we drove daily to spot game. We drove past a Springbuck creche. The one on the ground is a new born but they are dropping babies more or less the same time ..... predators cannot eat them all. (At least in theory)

_DSC9208-1.jpg

We saw a cheetah mom with her 2 cubs about 1 year old. They were feasting on one of the baby springbuck so my wife stopped liking cheetahs right there and them.

We saw another male ostrick and look at those pink shins ...... he was trying his best to get a date.

_DSC9288-1.jpg

We saw another small pride of lions (2 males, 2 females) but young. They were hunting so didn't pose for photo's.

Nesting white back cape vultures ....

Baby spingbuck pronking ....fold of skin opens up with raised white hair on the back .....

And my wife's immediate pet when we arrived ....named Chappies right there and then .... a ground squirrel

I use a Nikon D300 with a Nikon VR 70-300mm lense. General work is 18-200 VR Nikon and the one left at home is a VR 500mm ...to bulky for this trip.

Thats one amazing continent...The wildlife and nature is just spectacular. Thanks for posting bro. I hope ill be able to make it to Africa at one point in my life.

Last one with some late shows .... and worth the wiat.

Saw a cheeath with a kill ...yip, also a baby springbuck so now my wife was really not liking them. Note this one is wearing a radio collar.

_DSC9473.jpg

And the a 3 month old baby Cheetah walked out from a bush close by ....rare to see such a small Cheetah out during the day1

_DSC9486.jpg

A little further we saw a pair od Bat Ear Foxes. Lives on insect, lizzards and geko's. Normally active at night so happy to see one in daulight.

_DSC9496.jpg

Caught this desert geko on the tent ..... played for a while to get a good shot of him.

_DSC9504.jpg

Swallow tailed bee eater ......

_DSC9525.jpg

Spotted heyna .....

_DSC9564.jpg

And a male lion with another baby springbuck ...the little one was still alive and objecting about the treatment. My wife burst out in tears and insisted I do something .... OK, that cauight me off guard ..... these fellas play rough.

_DSC9547.jpg

And then we saw the last of the big 5 we have never encountered in all our years ... a male leopard at a watering hole about 250 yards away. Sorry for the poor shot but about as good as I got.....

Thank you for posting such beautiful pics of a place i will never get to visit. I love seeing things. You have awesome scenery there. Thank you again for sharing. Love the Land Rover Defenders. I would LOVE to have a 110 Country Wagon 5 door with a diesel & manual trans. Not allowed in our country, so i got a 2008 Power Wagon instead.
