While Mrs Pit was talking to family via the webcam I figured I'd do a little battoning.
I have smashed my knives through large sections of fir before without too much trouble but someone has given me some Maple and boy is this stuff tough ! After much sweating and bashing I had to give up on the large section and just worked on a 4" ish piece !

I couldn't get it started standing it on end so started from the side...

I soon split this bit but forgot to take a pic !!!!:o

As it was so tough I fashioned a rough batton out of another piece and then finished off a feeble attempt at a spoon from different piece of wood I had !

I was practicing on maple yesterday evening, it is really tough.

I tried the large stump in the pic and my knives would go in so far and then bounce out...unreal stuff....even my axe's kept bouncing off, I think I'm gonna have to get a splitting maul !!!

I was going to make my first self bow from a maple stave, it's supposed to be a good wood for it.

Man that looks like a fun time. I laid tile all dang day.

That spoon has possibilities. Don't hate on it, get out your pocketinife and finish it off.

Maybe that wood needs a bit more time to season...
Dare I say it - I think your clipper would be perfect for finishing up that spoon :) :) :)

Tough you say? ya' cant even split sweetgum with a maul! then again it wont burn/heat anyway.

Is THAT how they should be used? ;)

Just admit it - it was completely superfluous - but you had a TON of fun doing it!

The way I see it bro you don't buy a 1/4" thick blade to slice tomatos and cucumber !;)

And Yeah your right it is fun !!!!!:D:thumbup:

Looks like fun pitdog. :D Seasoned oak is another tough ass wood to baton through. The frozen variety makes it even more work. I did some this past January.

Isn't this the only real reason to carry a big knife ? It has to be fun or we wouldn't do it! :D
