a while ago amidst a thread.. Rick had posted a bit of a contest.. I was lucky enough to have one, and recieved the package last week just in time for my birthday..I couldn;t have been more psyched when I opened it.. it is simply the most awesome trad style fire kit I;ve ever seen. I;ve had various run of the mill flint and steel kits before.. but this is just a whole new level
here;s the tin (Hudson Bay Company Tobacco tin) that holds the kit
the little knob of a handle comes off to reveal a ridiculously powerful magnifying lens.. It;s been really gloomy here but there is no doubt in my mind on a sunny day it will send some char cloth blazing.
Here's the kit opened up:
contents: Jute,
Charred Cloth
prepared jute
steel wool
Fat wood
a ferro rod
English flint
a leather pad
and a strife "striker knife"
and a small tin for making char cloth
Here's the gear removed from the tin
and here's a close up o the strife
as you can imagine it is frighteningly sharp... and whatever rick does to the steel makes this hands down the best striker I;ve used.. It sends showers of sparks of the edge of a flint.
I count myself very lucky to have such a great piece of kit... a functional piece of gear that also captures the rugged beauty of another time..
I finaly got out Yesterday and made a few fires with this kit and well ..it was just awesome.. Hoepfully ican get out and play more tomorrow.. and take some pics.. Thanks
You Kick A$$ Rick..
Thanks.
