Had one of these before and made this mod, the blade is
much easier to open now, anyone notice what else was
done beside making a polished ramp to open the blade?

Here's how it originally was before the mod

and after my mod

Nice knife, quite a solid worker,

...So ya "de-horned" the cutie...Nice job there Gary...:thumbup:...I like the lines even better now...:)

Aye, exactly what I did, a double guard is probably good for fighting, to catch
the other guy's blade, but on a small folder, I didn't think it necessary and so
ground her down and polished up that area as well, handles much better IMHO
Thanks,
G2

...I can definitely see how it would be feel better and be easier to open...Good lookin' knife...:)

I think first place prize should be a cool 112 sheath for you and a 270 sheath for second place.

LOL...that bug moved back east.

Thanks Raj and Scott,
One thing to tell you if you try the mod yourself. I ground it down while it was still assembled, both the thumb ramp and the top guard removal. Then I buffed out both areas to a high polish.

But, I also took it back in the house and disassembled the knife for a good cleaning, as you want the dust out of there and any polishing compound out also.
The Torx wrenchs, you'll need two of the same size to remove the pivot screw as there are one on each side, not sure why Buck didn't go with a locking in place screw, probably more money to tool that
side, so to keep costs down to make it affordable, and it works, but wanted to warn you it will spin unless you are able to hold the other side still.
I took a pencil and a wet paper towel to go into each of the holes to remove any polishing compound.

Also I used some grease, sold by Chris Reeve knives, to put on the washers, which are nylon, probably didn't need to, but didn't want it dry and now it opens like glass :) very smooth and solid lockup!

Man you are messing with my personal EDC...but it really looks good. I especially like giving more thumb purchase to open the knife. Very slick and nice work.

Thanks sir, it was just a little something that I felt needed and to me it really works a bit finer to open.

NOW, I'd LOVE one with a Wharncliff blade like Tom Mayo does :) That would be Exceptional !

Gary, excellent work. Thanks for the info on the mods.I will second your request.Hope Buck does bring out a 172 with the Wharncliffe style blade.

Gary....I had one of the guys in the shop bevel out the thumb depression so now my #172 edc is sporting the Graley Scallop. Much easier to open.

Nice sir! Just got home and read this, glad to hear the mod was aceptable to you,
obviously I was a little worried when you first posted!
I'd not want to upset you at all.

I used three things,
9" flat disk sander, ran on a make shift thingy
3" round drum sander, the kind you can put in a drill press
8" buffer wheel for final polish

Of course with the knife open, you really really need to be very very careful.

OR take it apart, which I had to do afterwards in order to clean it up, so if I
were to do it again, I'd grind it out while it's apart.

But, I think you could also do this with a half round file as well and then some
sand paper, going up to a very smooth grit!
