I am building this for uncles bday. He is a teacher & engineer. He is always golfing, shooting, canoeing, fishing and lives a few miles from work. He carries some decent gear everyday (when allowed). I just wanted to get this together for his bday, to say thanks for doing some machine work here & there and because I don't think he covers as much as he might possibly need in day to day travel. I allowed for extra space & items that could function other than everyday. Overall I wanted to give him a good kit to keep in the truck, take with him while outdoors (away from home) & maybe even use some items in his classroom where he can to spark interest of some that may not see things like this.

I know I will add some paracord(atleast 20 feet)...

Other than that what could I add as every day type item that isn't too bulky.

Ideas I'm looking into now are:
Flashlight(good run time on common batts. Like streamlight microstream)

I hardly ever use flashlights after going over to the headlamp-side. They have really good battery life and always seem much more practical than having to hold something in your hand or mouth when you're trying to do stuff. They can be worn on the head, around the wrist or neck or attached to thin-edged objects with an integrated clip.

Petzl make an emergency headlamp/signalling device called an E+LITE (http://www.petzl.com/en/outdoor/signal-and-elite/elite). I think it would be perfect.

Nice idea to give him a PSK. Maybe toss in a Mini Bic. I see you have some water treatment tabs, add a zip top 5" x 7" bag. Will hold 1 Liter of water. These can be found at your local craft store.

Very cool!

Bic lighter and a Microstream or Stylus Pro like you said. I agree with the comments about a headlamp, I'm a recent convert. But handhelds still have their place, especially in small kits.

Goood kit & Great avatar(I like it) :)

I swap the whistle & the water purifier tabs as well.
MP1 tablets are compact and work great...
AMK makes a nice orange or yellow whistle that is smaller in size & flat
and yes the microstream is a fantastic flashlight ,runs on a single AAA (been edc'n it for a year in my pocket w/o an issue)

Maybe I missed it but what is the reaon for the water purification tablets if you have no water bag or canteen?

I really like the fishing kit and how it is done.

As others have stated, I would add a lighter. I would also add some of the Ultimate Survival Cord. That stuff is amazing

i planned to add a stainless bottle to the package. i spoke with him a few months ago and know he carries a bic but the mini will get added.

i think i might talk to my aunt and see if she wants to pitch in for a esee 4 to go with it.

i have a molle pouch that would hold the pelican and allow a knife and maybe a bottle holder to be added.

here are a few of my preforms filled with season all, hot sauce and some spare cr123s.
i keep them in my camping stuff and my truck bag. come in handy.

Leave to Jeffe to catch the obvious. Yeah, adding a small water pouch would be a good idea. Some 550 or survival cord, maybe add some small medical items (gauze pads, iodine, neosporine, bandaids, immodium, benedryl, advil). One thing that would help would be adding a smaller ferro rod freeing up some more room.

* You can get 3 packs of 1qt water bags from bepreparedtosurvive.com. I have them in all of my small kits and they really work great. While your there check out the TOPS survival saw. It's a smaller foldable saw that uses a hacksaw type blade, has a fuller handle, and the blade is pretty strong and longer than the red one you have in the picture. It's a lot stronger than the wire saw also.

i looked at the tops saws, i just went with these for now because of budget and ordering doubles and triples of most items. tried to get as much as possible from one place to save a penny on shipping.

i wish i would have ordered a few more of the esee mirrors.....

I 2nd the water bags from bepreparedtosurvive. They have gromets so you can carry them with some cord.

Put a Junglas in there, it'll be his best birthday ever ;)

love my junglas, but we are talking about getting him a rock river lar-8 A4.
he has been wanting a good 1000yd 308. i think it would be better than a FAL...guess we will see.
