A little off topic...CAR ACCIDENT :(

I think I understand your forgiving posture on this, but if the kid is not willing to try and compensate you somehow (I think) it really is your duty to go through the proper channels. You losing out on your Busse purchase or loss of archery equipment shouldn't be completely lost on someone because they may have a hard time. Maybe it will build his character if you assist him in doing the right thing.

Just a thought. I don't know which insurance company you have or which one he has but in our past we talked to the insurance company of the person that hit us. Explain that more then the car was broken. Items that would in working order if the young man had not hit your car.
In an accident we had we ran into some static. When they started to balk I said “don't worry I will just have my insurance company call you to handle it”. We got a check right away. Now the fact that my insurance company is one of the bigger ones may have had something to do with them backing down but it can't hurt.
While I think you are being very noble it may not be necessary.
Good luck!

It is illegal not to be insured in Ontario, so yes he did have insurance. But the fact that he drives a sports car, and this is not his first accident is going to make his rates go up so high he won't be able to afford to drive anymore.

you can't just choose to have your insurance cover it though, can you? unless you were to just say you found it that way...

that would be a pretty nice gift to increase your premiums and pay your deductible for this kid though

I don't have contents coverage on my insurance :(

Anyways, we have spoken to our insurance companies and since he is completely at fault, my insurance company doesn't pay a penny, therefore my rates don't go up. Like I said, I think I am doing this young lad a big enough favor by not mentioning my damaged bow. Also, I have about $250 more in my account than I thought I did, looks like I might be able to scrounge up the funds for my Hellrazor (provided I got one) after all.

Allowing him to keep doing things like driving an RWD sportscar without snow tires in a foot and a half of snow might be doing the kid a favor, but that favor could very well let him smash into a car or truck with a passenger in it. The decision to drive that car in that condition in that weather should be enough of a tip off that the young motorist has no concern for other people on the road and his previous accidents drive that point home harder. Giving him an oppurtunity to repay you for your bow and to choose between staying off of the road or paying much higher rates for being a loose cannon on four wheels sounds like the favor he needs more.

Oh believe me, the kid learned his lesson, his car is a complete write off (as is mine, but it's a lease so who gives a shit), and insurance is not paying for the aftermarket products he had installed. I also took the liberty of lecturing him (at the top of my lungs) on the problems of driving a sports car with racing slicks (seriously, how thick can you be) during the peak of the largest snowstorm of the decade. I think the boy has already dug himself deep enough hole without me slapping another $1000 debt onto his lap. I may speak to him about the bow at a later date, but right now I am going to leave it be.
