A Little Playing Around With The BK-14

The reason I ask is because I was looking at the FireSteel.com GobSpark Armageddon FireSteel at 11 bucks. It seems like the best value out there. I was also toying with the idea of making some out of exotic woods with blank rods.

Just wondering what you think.

Its been a while but I think Firesteel.com uses misch metal and thats what I like to use.

goinggear.com has some pretty nice blanks, get the BEAST....

I'll check out the beast! Thanks for the tip! Feel free to keep the cold weather up north!

I think I'm going to pass on a 44 dollar blank rod. On the other hand if I ever need a good billy club....:D

I personally don't care for the GobSpark Armageddon but I have been thinking about getting a Ranger Tube and seeing if I could replace the rod with a going gear rod, doing that and texturing the tube I think it could be a pretty good piece of kit.

What about the Gobspark don't you like?

The striker for the nano takes a bit of getting used to and the lanyard helps it function a lot better than just trying to use the striker. Personally the nano is my favorite edc firesteel, but I still prefer the ESEE firesteel in the bush.

What do you think of the strikeforce? I carry that EDC and I tell ya I wouldn't leave to the bush without it.

Big handle that takes up a lot of space but is nothing but a handle. I prefer the RAT/ESEE fire starter because the handle is more than a handle. It gives me a good grip, plus stores tinder, and also has a compass.

I like the strike force a lot. I've had several and had passed several along to friends. I have also bought several of them as gifts. I've probably bought 20 of them, and the strike force is a fantastic fire starter. I still prefer the nano for edc because of its size and design, and the ESEE fire starter in the bush because of the lesser bulk, sealed storage, and the compass, but I'm sure I'll get another strike force I always do :)

Rough Riders, $5.99 and the are a 3/8" by 3" mischmetal glob thrower. I still like my GG, but for the money, I been using the RR lately and loving it.

Nano strikers are cool as heck though, I have one of the aluminum ones and it handy to just roll with and not have to worry about it.

I can't WAIT until I purchase my 14..... ahhhh, I dream about making more money

good stuff, man. i found a small patch of bamboo in one of the parks nearby. i'm definitely going to try and play with friction fire with it next time i'm out there.

What do you think is the best all around firesteel/striker combo out there. Best value too?

Thanks

The ones the BECKERHEADS will have soon.......;)

heck yeah! here's a prototype currently undergoing testing in a military base. the heat generated is intense so they're looking for the viability of using it to power our nuclear subs.

hey mistwalker- why would you replace the ranger rod with a going gear firesteel? i thought firesteel.com and going gear used basically the same stuff. have you had experience saying otherwise?

The reason is a purely personal one. My first experience with a F S .com firesteel blank was a bad one, and then my first taste of customer service and interaction with F S .com was even worse and really left me put off by the company as a whole. That's why I haven't already done it and just keep waiting on a better product. I know with the mods it would be a decent piece of kit, but every time I go to order it that little voice in the back of my head says "you know you'll still be supporting that company" and I just can't pull the trigger. My experience with G.G. was the exact opposite so....

o man i really wish you didnt tell me about poor customer sevice. there little ranger with small handle is like my favorite firesteel, but now i know i wont ever feel good getting another one because i hate places with bs for customer service

I've been told their customer service has improved over the last couple of years. I just have trouble getting past my first experience with no questions asked about the steel or the technique used, and simply being told that it's likely I just don't know how to use a fire steel. There are a few items they make that I know with the right mods would be decent pieces of gear...I just can't bring myself to order them. Been thinking about just making my own.

Speaking of firesteels, I got my GoinGear Moose Firesteel, and my 2 3/8s today. Moose firesteel, hell yeah.

Lol, that hilarious! I bought a few 3/8" x 4" blanks a month ago. I love going gear fire steels

The Moose 1/2" x 5"

Hell yeah, I would say it will be my go to firesteel, but it weighs as much as my BK2, so, um, no. It will be fun to whoop this big dude out at one of my survival classes to start the completion fire with. Strike it with my Cheness Tenchi Katana for the ninja effect, LOL
