ROCK6, is that a small ziplock bag of PowerBait Crappie Nibbles that you have for your PSK fishing kit? If it is, here's a little trick I use that you may or may not do that I kind of discovered after fishing with them.
Like most I have a little kit with me all the time. I keep the bait in one of those big straws you get at a fast food place as they are over a 1/4'' I.D. and about twice as thick as a ziplock and hold the bait very well. I hot glue the ends shut for long term storage. Then I wrap one layer of duct tape around the straw to use as a cover if I ever have to cut open an end of the straw and use the bait.
When I used the bait, they didn't always stay on my hook and I would lose them like any other bait. Normally I didn't care because I had a whole jar with me, but while fishing I was thinking about a true survival situation and how I could save my bait to make it last longer. So I remembered the felt that was in the old military fishing kits and I decided to pull some out and look at it closer.
What I did was use the needle and thread from my kit to sew a small pouch with a little tail on it. In the pouch I put the little nibble bait and used the hook to close the top of the felt pouch so the bait couldn't come out.
Now I have scented bait that is protected in a pocket in the felt so it lasts longer and the cheap felt acts as a lure releasing every last bit of the nibble scent, getting the max use of your bait while fishing.
Also, not all felt is equal. Some will tear like wet tissue and others are pretty tough. What I have done now is made a few small lures with the pocket from nylon ribbon which is VERY tough. It does the same thing, but I have not tried it so I have no clue if the fish will go for it, but I don't see why not. I did melt the end of the ribbon with a Bic so it wouldn't unravel and you would lose everything on the first strike of a fish. When ever you cut nylon ribbon, melt the ends, just like 550.
Plus colors (if colors matter to fish???) and widths for ribbon are countless. The ribbon or felt for that matter pack very well into a small fishing kit taking up little space. Each little lure I made wasn't over an inch long. Any longer and they would just bite the end of the felt and rip it off and not come close to the hook. It's just common sense here. Sorry for the long winded post. I will keep them shorter from now on.
