A Little Rant (Or Some Likes And dislikes)

I freaking despise that some companies insist on putting finger choils on blades less than 6”. “Hey, let’s take 3/4 of an inch off the most used part of the blade, durrrr”.🤪

Longer than 6”, fine. Smaller than that pisses me right TF off and I’ve been voting with my dollars lately.

Most of the stuff I cut I poke the blade all the way in and slice. It’s like they all got together and thought “now what can we do to make everything this guy cuts snag up unless he’s watching to avoid this dumbass choil”?😡😡🤬
Yes. 100%. Finger choils are useless and annoying.

I don’t like neck knives with short handles, give me some grip for my whole hand for Pete’s sake, or at least four fingers. Place in a slip and call it a day…in the front left pocket or horizontal carry. Then never really liked an object hanging from my neck ( except my double chin ) reminds me of loose gold chains and an open polyester shirt…… too much disco vibe there. I made it through the 70s as a young kid, fashion faux paus there…..never understood how those styles made a comeback…yuck!

Overpriced GEC. For fixed blades, I don’t understand having to buy a basic sheath separately. I don’t like too tight of a spring where I cannot open a pocket knife.

I do like a little patina, and I like small fixed blades.

For me, first foray into "great" knives was a TOPS Tracker 3, and it didn't take long after that for me to get two folding Spydies and now I'm kinda longing for more great knives. Been thinking about an SHF, but the price on those is just insane and I don't really like framelocks, especially after the compression lock and CBBL, but there's something about the SHF that just speaks to me ... I'm also thinking of a Spyderco Bodacious, since I wanna try a Spydie with no choil sometime as well.

I know I prefer an opening hole to thumbstuds, been that way ever since I had my Leatherman Wave (going on 12 years now) and ever since I have the Sage and Manix I know I prefer locks that allow a bit of fidgetness.

Also I think overly thick blades and grinds on folding knives are dumb :D

I won't have liner lock
I won't have a flipper
I won't have a chinese made knife
I won't have certain brands no matter where they're made. (CS,CRKT,SOG)
I won't have any of those weird blade shapes - Grimsmo for example
I won't have a "Fancy" beaded lanyard
I won't have a massive chopper

Yep, I had several Hinderers at one point, the only one that stuck around is a no choil slicer xm3.5
I just got this Chaves kickstop on Tuesday. Notice what it doesn't have.

I'm also really considering an SHF. No choil is one of the features I like about it.

By the way, the Hinderer Project X does not have a finger choil.

Does OP like any knives? Darn near ruled most everything out.

I think he has knives, as we get older we grow grumpier, I find myself shouting back at the TV when I see stupid things. 😀 I saw some positive things at the end so I know he cannot be too old yet. So excuse me as I have to meet my buddies at Cracker Barrell and drink coffee and wear my baseball cap to cover my bald spot…I know I have one, my daughter saw it. Where did I put my Blue Emu?
I have many knives. None of these issues are deal killers, just preferences.

And who are you calling old? I'm just middle aged. Well, on the far end of middle aged, but I guess I'm still cranky. 😂

Is CMP D2 a super D2 or just a brand?

"Is CMP D2 a super D2 or just a brand?"

Depending on who you ask....?
It's powered metal. There are also Spray versions......

Normally I love CPM and the knives, but Not for D2.
It does make the D2 blades stronger, but what D2 is known for, and good for is Large, Chunky Chromium carbides.... and the process of spraying them, and powdering them keeps them smaller... which I don't like.

Large carbide are like mini toothy serrations cutting, tearing, clawing their way through flesh, rope, whatever..... I like my D2 toothy! That's why I prefer it as Ingot steel. Old-school style.

*Disclaimer, Probably everything I say is wrong.

Back locks are quaint. I left my Adamas and Leatherman in my wife's car because we had to go into our daughter's middle school today no and forgot to retrieve them. I made due at work with what was in my bag. A big ol Buck 110. I cut open a bunch of stuff and kept thumbing for the axis/liner/frame I am used to.

Not a deal breaker but certainly of a slower era. Classic knife though. Got me through the day while the rest lounged in comfort in my wife's sedan.

Forrest, I restored your post...(edit if you feel the need)

My response for this thread is pretty simple. I have historically had several things I don't like in a knife, yet will say that I own knives that I like that break all those rules, so in the long run, they're more general guidelines. Mine are the same as several others:

- I don't love serrations, because I just don't need them in my cutting uses. Plus, I can sharpen a knife fairly well, so I've never had an issue cutting cordage.
- Backlocks aren't my favorite locking mechanism, but man do I own a lot of them. The Lionsteel TM2 takes top points for being the smoothest actuation of this lock design in my collection. IYKYK.
- About the only steel I don't like are the bottom run things like 8CR (and below that). Virtually anything else I'm good with, and will buy a knife in almost any steel if I really like it.
- I don't like too-small knives, but eh, own tons of them.
- I don't like too-large knives, but eh, own tons of them.
- I don't like knives from China, but own a few that I really like that I've picked up over the years. It is what it is.
- About the only thing I strongly dislike these days are pocket carry fixed blades. I absolutely cannot get into those, despite owning a couple of them. That was more a result of loving the knives themselves, and just accepting that the sheath they came with wasn't going in my pocket. I have experimented with slipping it inside a belt, and using the ulticlip that way.

Things I DO like are as follows:

- I love crossbar locks on knives, or other locking mechanisms that allow one handed actuation, while keeping my fingers out of the "flight path".
- I like flippers with bearing pivots.
- I also like knives with smooth, dialed in washers, looking at you Spartan SHFs, and Les George knives!
- I like titanium scales, especially when milled with interesting patterns.
- I also like wood, and ODG micarta or G10 in neat colors on some knives. I also enjoy all of the new carbon fiber based materials on the market today. Variety is always fun.

I could list out things I like all day, but it essentially boils down to "I'll know it when I see it" for me.

"I'm not crazy about [...] S45VN [...]

I really like [...] S35VN..."

I can't say I've seen a whole lot of difference between the two. I doubt you could tell one from the other in a blind test. Of course that's true of a lot of steels, so...

I don't love finger choils that eat up a ton of blade, but I'd rather have that than a knife that keeps my index finger 1" from the heel of the blade.

I love knives with handles that allow you to get close to the edge while still providing some protection against sliding up onto it. Oz Roosevelt might be the ultimate expression of that. Spyderco Tenacious is pretty good, too.

I hate pocket clips that are too tight, or too grabby because of textured handles or lock bar cutouts. I'd rather have a pocket clip with no tension than too much tension. In 40+ years carrying knives, I don't think I've ever had one fall out of my pocket because the clip was too loose. Because, I don't do a lot of back handsprings.
