In the end you are either a student or a fan. Nothing wrong with either one, just different attitudes about the situation......300Bucks(sophomore)

This might seem a little odd, but to supplement your visual assessment, you can sometimes tell the difference between natural and synthetic scales by *gently* rubbing the material on the edge of your front tooth, which can provide a surprisingly sensitive texture gauge.

A jeweler showed me this trick as a method to tell real pearls from fakes, but with a little practice, it can be used on other natural materials as well. The natural stuff tends to have a more or less gritty or abrasive feel, while synthetics are often glassy smooth and lacking in any discernible texture.

Since many of the other popular handle materials already have their own show threads, here's some real tortoise shell in the rough:

Here's a Remington,odd stuff,"pyremite ??",or celluloid ?. What is the difference
Looks like sea shell ? No?

Very odd-but nice-looking stuff. But, does celluloid actually crack around the pins? Shrink yes, but?
