A Little...Survival Fishing?

Shows why a Survival kit should always have basic fishing supplies in it. What was the Hispanic guy using for bait? If I am a bettin man he just found some worms or grubs on the bank.

Also where are you located, west, middle or east Tennessee? Sorry I have no clue where signal mountain is.

very good stuff as always mist. yummmmm the season is almost upon us folks for blue gills and morel's. omg i can't wait. now that is survival lol

Around rivers and lakes catching fish, if you have the kit to do so, is a lot easier than catching game.

He was using worms, they were in a commercial container though.

South East TN, in the tri-state (TN, GA, AL,) area.

South east Tennessee, I was raised north of you in the Oak Ridge area!

Ah, Oak Ridge...that place I lose sleep over lol.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks man, glad you liked the thread.

Thanks man. The Bluegills are easy to do here. I hope to find some morels this year, no luck at all last year.

Whenever I go fishing we always keep the bluegill. One of the best tasting fish out there in my opinion. Have had most Yellow Perch lately, mainly because even my nephew likes those. Only fish he will eat.

I built a copy of Dave Canterbury's underhanded casting rig using a large pill bottle with wrist lanyard and works pretty well... and Tony Nester's recommendation to carry a small aquarium dip net to pick up bait or mess of small fish has a lot of merit .. I've equipped my Explorer with a clothing bar (piece of broomhandle with a couple of cable ties on the clothing hooks) that I plan on using as a walking stick if I have to trek home in a GHB scenario.... I had an idea to add a small partially closed eyelet at each end, loop about 20yards of heavy mono end to end on the shank of the eyelet, and carry a weighted treble "snatch hook"...estimate the distance to the school of mullet, uncoil the line, work the line thru the open part of the hook , hand throw the hook beyond the school, and rip the hook thru to foul hook the mullet...not as much precision as with a true rod, but might work....

I think I will add a small packet or two of salt and pepper to my survival fishing kit. I have room in it for a few small packets.

Thanks Mist for another awesome post. Got me wanting some fish cooked over the open fire , been awhile since I had any. thanks again,Travis

Man those bream are the best eating fish with scales there is.

Thanks for posting .

Jeff

Mist, I truly love reading your posts, excellent as always. Did the guy know you were snapping his picture, make him uncomfortable? Anyway great post.

To all you who haven't tried Bluegill, you don't know what your missing, more for me.:D

Great post ,reminds me of fishing as a kid I always had hooks and line but only the one pole so I would rig sticks for my buddies and we would spend all day and go to my house so my mom could fry up our catch:)
Always bluegill bass and trout hate noisy kids.

Trout, bluegill, and crappie are my favorite fresh water fish, at least down here anyway. The list of favorite salt water fish is quite a bit longer :)

Sounds interesting. Could definitely work, and I've seen a lot of mullet caught that way. I thought I was told that snatch-hooking was no longer legal last time I was in Tampa, but in a survival situation...I LOVE smoked mullet.

What sucked was that I had salt, pepper, and tabasco sauce in my pack and didn't even think about it.

Thanks Travis, glad you enjoyed the post. To me all meats taste better cooked over open flames.

They are definitely one of my favorites.

Great post buddy, that fish looks pretty darn good eating !

Thanks bro, it was pretty darn good. I was wishing I hadn't turned down the second one...I had plenty of firewood, and plenty of river cane for skewers...

Most of my early, childhood, fishing was with cane poles. I'm so used to making improvised poles that just having the tackle in a kit is fine by me.

These pics make me want to go fishing. I love the taste of fresh bluegill, great pics.

I know what you mean, I much prefer fresh caught fish.

Thanks for postin that. I was "raised" on bluegill and catfish.

Now ya got me hungry....:D

Glad you enjoyed it, I was too.

Mistwalker... well I know that using more than 1/4 stick of dynamite is considered showing off

Missed this one...

He knew I was taking pictures of the whole general area, and yes even in his direction. He didn't seem uncomfortable at all, he smiled and waved while I was previewing photos.

Personally I prefer a more stealthy approach :)

Very cool !!!!

Thanks. glad you enjoyed the post.

Hey Mistwalker, excellent post as always!

I don't care much for the taste of cooked fish, but seeing your pictures made even me hungry!

I need to play more with survival fishing techniques.
