A little sword help for a novice? :P

I've been seriously considering buying myself a nice sword, and after looking into HI extensively, it seems like they've got some pretty nice stuff.

I have a Cold Steel Naval Dirk at the moment, its a very nice sword, but not large enough to do any really devestating blows. You don't feel that power that you get when you wield something truely powerful when I use the dirk

take a look'see

To be specific I won't be using the sword for chopping or extensive labor (I don't need a work horse), but I would like something attractive and nice n' tuff, and something relatively large also, or at least greater than 23 inches. Also, I would like for the sword to be $250 or less (I'm on a budget). I saw the Uddha sword, but it looks a little too... knifey, to me, if you can get what I mean. I don't exactly know what I want, maybe a katana? Does HI make any European Middle Ages pattern swords I am not aware of? That wold be nice. I've taken a look at there site, but it seems they don't show everything they have to offer.

Could anyone recommend a sword to me? I know I'm not being really specific... if there are any non HI alternatives you would also like to recommend, that would also be greatly appreciated.

Pictures would be nice, if you've got em :)

Thanks guys!

PS: This is my first thread :P

Wait to see what hops up on Yangdu's almost daily deals...certainly the best deals around!

Welcome to the Cantina!!

Welcome, pull up a chair and relax. Enjoy your stay! :)

I have a Kantana but I don't know how to use it. :o I trimmed the bushes with it once though, pretty nice.

Don't forget the 25" Sirupati and Kobra. I have one of each and they are awesome weapons! Not much to know, just swing and keep your body parts out of the way.:D

My favorites for nice solid swords are:
Bhutan Sword 21.75" 35-42 ounces
Tibetan Short Sword 32" 38-44 ounces
Tibetan Long Sword 36.5" 50-60 ounces
Indonesian Sword 27.75" 45-58 ounces
These all have the chiruwa style handle and are heck for stout.
Lengths are overall, not blade only. Handles in different wood, horn, or antler.
The chiruwa style Katana is impressive also, just a different beast. Lots of pictures have been posted, just do a search.

This is from a post in the picture thread in January. It shows a few of the HI swords:

5016BigIronbySher.jpg

on bottom
36" --- 53.2 oz Tibetan Long Sword
left to right
14" --- 16.2 oz Seax
30" --- 44.9 oz Kobra
27.5" - 45.1 oz Indonesian Sword
21.75" -42.1 oz Bhutan Sword
27.75" -57.6 oz Indonesian Sword
25" --- 42.3 oz Chitlangi
14" --- 17.6 oz Seax
on top
23" --- 38.6 oz Bag-Bhairab
19.5" - 40.3 oz Chiruwa Ang Khola

The 57.6 ounce Indonesian arrived today - AWESOME For when you absolutley positively have to utterly destroy something quickly. It actually doesn't feel too heavy in the hand since Sher made this one with a generous handle.

The Napoleon swords do a fine job on shrubs too...

I would consider my 19inch 42 oz Cak AK a short sword.
Same with my 20inch Chitlangi

Khukuri's are descended from the short sword Greek Kopis.
Any over 18 inches is short sword territory.

My Uddha sword is on the top of my list.
A GREAT escrima blade IMHO.

The Tulwar is amazing. Devastating power strokes. Breathtaking. Heavy, but very manuverable. I saw my instructor do a short sinawali set with his AND mine:eek: (we're thinking about u tube :D )
It gets swung a lot.

The Everest katana and I are still getting aquainted. Yet still another wonderful HI blade.

These swords are imbued with a fine energy. Everybody here that own HI stuff knows what I'm taliking about.
Original and wonderful. These swords were made by folks that swing blades.

Not sure I've got all the names right, but here are some I've had.
From the top.
30" Kobra
Katana
Old model Himalayan
Tibetan
New model Himalayan

I bought one of the manjushrees back in january i believe for about $170 or something around that. Double fullered double edged blade looks pretty medieval. weighs about 2.5 pounds i think about 28 inches long.

sorry pic is crappy.

although the handle is wood carved and very nice, i would probably re-handle mine someday. theirs things i like about the ball like hilt and things i dont.

but overall its a damn fine sword, beastly and beautiful.

It's a little shorter than your goal, but the longer (18"+) Crow knives are very powerful tools and weapons.

I had a Cherokee Rose bowie, and while it was a beautiful and graceful weapon, I was afraid to use it on anything. The Crow, on the other hand, feels extremely powerful and sturdy, and I would have no qualms using it on a small tree or a large attacking animal (bipedal or otherwise).

(edit- looking at your priorities, they seem to be the opposite of mine. The katana from HI is one of the sturdiest "Japanese-eque" swords you could find. A Himalayan sword might be right for you.)

I recently acquired a backward sword about 58oz. Very hefty, and has that "energy" you mentioned.
I definately would not want to be hit with it.
It's short enough to use in close quarters as well, like somebody coming into your bedroom, uninvited.
If they don't rest in peace, they'll definately rest in pieces!

thanks for all you guys's help! I think I really like the manjushree, the katana, kobra and tibetan sword. I was quite impressed with the kobra... when I first saw it, I considered it a knife, but it looks like a pretty potent weapon. I'll keep a look out for original models that look like what I want.

Frankly, it looks to me like any of HI's swords would be great. I'll just have to look out for some of Yangdu's deals.

I'm not completely sure it's kosher to be pointing out other alternatives to HI on the HI forum, but you did ask so...

[So Nasty gets to simply delete the whole thing. Why is it that some folks don't check the rules or ask nicely, but rather assume that what they choose to do will be either fine or the exception to the rules? Note for the future...posts like this will not only be deleted, but they will in fact be assigned the infraction points per Spark's rule. The Sword forum at BF is not a SPONSORED forum...you might figure that would make a difference.]

There is a sword forum on this board I would suggest asking the same question there as well.

Jpultz - new guys get some slack. There are "open" forums on Bladeforums.com and there are *sponsored* business sites. This one is *sponsored* so no active links to competitors are allowed. Comparisons are one thing, links to their sites are different. You are more than welcome here...almost everyone is...we just need reminders occasionally.

Welcome to the forums...

My apologies as you say, your house your rules and I didn't read them. It won't happen again, instead I will merely invite them to the sword forum to discuss the topic of interest as they so choose.

Outstanding Triton...Thank you!

BTW...nice work. I might be tempted to visit there myself.
