These little trailhawks from CS have really been catching my eye lately, so when I saw them in my local knife shop I grabbed one. But they look a bit cheap, and it was dull as a hammer so I wanted to spruce it up a little.

Took a lot of time and patience to get a nice, sharp convex edge on it

It is a great cutter now. After I'm done pretending I'm Mel Gibson in the Patriot, I may cut down the handle so it will fit in my pack.

T. Nice job! but your name is Tknife, not Thawk. As hard as it is for me to do this I have to, under Imminent Yo-name, confiscate this hawk. You will get a fair market compensation of course. You have my address.

Seriously though what stain did you use?

Great work, they look much nicer bare, but that coating they use is pretty tough, eh? I still have to work on the edge of my frontier hawk.

What is the head coated with and how did you remove it, if you don't mind sharing that info? Thanks. -Matt-

Thanks guys. I am pretty happy with the way it came out. Not sure what the coating is, but it's not very thick. I used Jasco paint and epoxy stripper, then a razor blade. Then some wet/dry sand paper lubed up with WD40, that always seems to keep a nice gun metal color to the steel.
Then let it soak up some linseed oil, and finally stained it with an oak finish. (I'll have to check, we just had it in the garage) Not bad at all for a $20 hawk though! It seems to take a pretty nice edge, don't know how well it will hold though.

Thanks for the info! I plan to acquire one of these soon and was hoping to not have to grind the finish off. That makes my life easier! -Matt-

Looks good! They are a lot of fun in the woods, and chop surprisingly well. I know what you mean about having to thin out the edge a lot
