This year on the west coast of BC there is a projected run of over 25 million Sockeye salmon.Never a run this large has happened since 1913.
I live in the south central part of the province some 475 miles from the city of Vancouver as a car drives. With the twists and turns that the rivers make I think it would be safe to say these fish swin close to 600 miles uphill and upstream to reach their spawning grounds.
Today I visited some spawning creeks close to here to have a look.
The fish have already been in them for around 3 weeks .
One creek is only around 15 feet across

There is lots of fish in there likely thousands all spread out and spawning in the fast water

They are getting quite beat up and bruised beening close to the end of their lives

This creek has a steep grade and its amazing to see them swim up the fast water

There were so many fish spawning that you could see pools of eggs that had washed up behind rocks .They had been washed out of the nests by other salmon.Kind of have to look for the pink under the fish not a real good shot

Another picture of water that held some fish today

I do have other pictures.
Very nice day with short walks along river trails to view the fish

Even the town stretch of the Boise is packed with fly rods right now. I never could figure out how these things could swim up creeks like that... just mind boggling. Thanks for the awesome shots!

Beautiful. The life of Salmon will never seize to amaze me. Thanks for putting the pics up.

That's just awesome! Growing up in the PNW, every year I heard there was less and less in the salmon runs. I told my father to send me some smoked salmon for Christmas this year:thumbup::D

I just moved to the PNW USA and from Texas and have absolutely no idea how to river fish for these things! Time to take a crash course.

I know one spot where you cant even see the water there is some many, got to agree with you there life's journey that comes all the way back to the spot they were born is just amazing

Amazing. Thanks for posting these pics, dboles. I was just out in BC, and it was nice to have 'record salmon run' be the top headline. This sort of thing is great to see.

All the best,

- Mike
