an answer for DDean: "Is it electroplated or is there are purely chemical process during an etching?"
It is a purely chemical process, but you can add electircity to it and do copper electroplating. It workd fine for me in its chemical form, but a smith buddy of mine does the electroplating.
To do it, you need:
Copper Sulfate (available in most "farm and fleet" type stores.
Distilled water.
Warm the water, and stir in your Cuper Sulfate until it makes a windex-colored solution, make sure to super saturate.
Apply to the area you want to plate, let stand for a few minutes.
You can also try Immersing the object in the solution.
Like gilding, this is a thin layer of copper on the surface of the metal.
