I've been reading Ed's Manifesto lately and find he has a lot to say that makes sense. In an interview linked there, he mentions the following:

bak: What would you say is the most important tool in one’s EDC, maybe even something you could make your wife, girlfriend or mother carry?

EC: A small non-tactical looking folding knife that can be used both as a tool and weapon if need be...

Based on this, I've been going over my collection and not finding much that fits. About the closest I've got would be an H1 Dragonfly 2 and a CS Mini Tuff Lite. I've been looking at the Leatherman Crater C33T (for tools plus non-threatening looks, but not sure how secure its lock is), the Skeletool (I've seen posts where owners consider it good enough to be their primary knife), and the thumbstud Ka-Bar Mini Dozier.

My criteria beyond what Ed had to say:
- thumbholes that protrude (to my eye they look tactical--I have many Spydercos already);
- it must lock;
- nothing assisted (considering pocket carry without a clip)
- linerlocks (usually have weak ball detents and I'm considering pocket carry without a clip, plus they often fail on comma cuts--if you know of one that meets my criteria, I'm all ears!);
- nothing with a blade length of 3" or over for legality issues in my area;
- I won't buy anything made by CRKT--too much bad history with their folding knives;
- hopefully, sub-$100 price.

Are there any knives I'm forgetting, or do you think my Mini Tuff Lite suffices for this role?

Cold steel is the only brand I could recommend here that have knives meeting your criteria...that's just my opinion though...:rolleyes:

With all your spydercos you don't have a native 5 lw or delica 4? Those fits all your needs and they run for under $100 and come with bright colors to make it looks less "tacticool".

Of the choices above I'd pick up a mini grip or look for a used mini ritter. Axis locks are great, Strong, fully ambidextrous, smooth and fun to play with.

Other options: (Cold steel tend to look very "tacticool" IMO)
H&K Mini Axis
Benchmade Lone Wolf Mini Landslide
Cold Steel Mini American Lawman
Cold Steel Mini AK-47
Buck Bantam BBW
Buck BuckLite Max Folding Sm or Med

Personally i would visit knife center right now and pick up one of the last Cold Steel Mini Voyager Tanto's for 25 bucks. You won't be dissapointed.
It looks slightly tactical, but only 3 inches so not too scary. It's very solid.

I carry one every day and it's the knife i have most confidence in. Also carries well without clip. And much sturdier than the Esee and say a delica.

ESEE Zancudo. Priced right too, at like $30.

I have one of these and hate it; besides, it's got a 3" blade, and I need less, and don't want to pay to cut it down.

Cold Steel Mini Recon
Benchmade Mini Griptillian
Lionsteel Opera

The CS is out for the "tacticool" thing. The other two look promising--thanks!

I have a Native (S30V model) and hate it for its buried thumbhole. I also have D4Ws which have been bobbed (the Delica is at 3" with the tang) and am avoiding them for the "tacticool" feature.

The 556 might be a winner; the Mini Ritter would be better but I'm not looking for a grail quest.

Other than the MTL, CS offerings are out for the "tacticool" nonsense. I'll definitely look into the Bucks. The H&K is black-bladed and the other seems to be out of production, but thanks for 3 very promising candidates!

I've never been a fan of tanto tips on folders, also the blade's too long. If memory serves I tried on a 3" Voyager some years back and the handle just didn't work for my hand--I'm not sure why. The 4" fit much better but had too long and too wide a blade for carry.

Umm OK.

Who's ED?

From the blog:

Ed is a security specialist and combatives instructor with over 10 years experience in public safety along the northern border area of Mexico. He runs seminars and private training specific to anti-abduction, escapology, free hand and unconventional edged weapons work. He is also director of Libre Fighting Systems in Mexico.

And as I said, he makes a lot of sense.

Disregard--found a C304 that will work just fine.
