a machete got lost and now having fun in the snow.

it's not that scenic especially compared to ringwood (just 5 mi away) but all the man-made stuff inside makes up for it in weirdness. the trails are maintained by jersey off road bicycle association (jorba) so you won't find any maps for it from typical hiking sources. the map below should be all you need:

now would be the best time to check it out. once the trails are clear of snow again, it's going to be covered by mountain bikers (myself included) that it's not the ideal hiking spot to get peace and quiet in.

not my video:

i also posted my mountain biking trip there from a few a weeks ago on the first part of this thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=801190

Thanks again for all the information. I didn't realise how close Jungle Habitat is to Ringwood. I'm usually in Ringwood once every month or two when I go trap shooting. I would be using the trails in the area, but I don't own a pair of snow shoes. The amount of snow we've been getting lately is crazy...

I looked through the tread that you linked me to and noticed that you have a maxpedition bag. Is that a Falcon II? I've been thinking of getting one for day hikes, how do you like it?

Nice pics, looks like you had a fun time out there. I have yet to use any production machetes this winter.. I bet they all feel like I hate them after not using them in 3 months

Amen to that. Learn something new every day...

Nice pics man, I definitely have to get up North a little more. Thanks for sharing

thanks! sourlands is also another one maintained by mountain bikers. it's closer to central nj and might be worth checking out.

Nice pics, looks like you had a great time. I think the birds' nests may be squirrel nests.

you might be right. i suck at these things - every nest on the tree is a bird's nest to me and every cave is a bear den :o

Is your Lite Machete handle black? Did you dye it, or did it come that way?

yup, it's black. i don't like wood handles or anything resembling them in color. i used rit fabric dye and sharpie on some of them. i forgot which is which now.

Interesting thread.

thanks.

Love winter hiking.

there's another potentially massive storm coming next week by us. i'm actually looking forward to more snow :D

the route i take actually takes me past ringwood (morris rd), it's that close. i've never gone to that range. is it only trap or they allow rifles as well? i'm starting to get tired of driving all the way to range 14/fort dix (75 mi one way).

yup, it's a falcon ii. i've been using it for awhile and i'm very happy with the design. i can easily pack all the stuff i need for a non-winter overnighter actually. when it's almost empty it also compresses like an accordion. hard to describe but the excess material kinda folds towards itself so there's no excess flapping on the sides kinda thing unlike regular packs built with softer material.

more pics of my pack/gear here (post #15):

thanks. i just love the sound of that 'twang.

It's skeet and trap only. The range is almost always extremely busy, probably because it's basically the only public range around. I spent two hours waiting to shoot two rounds of trap once. It's not exactly safe either, a lot of the people that go there don't have experience with guns and don't know what they're doing. The way the fields are set up also makes it very easy to get hit by chunks of clay, I've seen it happen to someone more than once. They aren't exactly deadly when falling to the ground slowly, but I've seen people without shooting glasses on the range.

Thanks for the help, I should be buying a Falcon II sometime soon.

Wow another one from Jersey. Then again I haven't been on this forum for a while now. Looks like I'm going to have to check in more often. I remember when I read about it in in a Weird New Jersey mag a while back. Id like to see that park one these days.
With all this snow we have been getting I think I might have to get a set of snow shoes lol.

Like a G rated Jurassic park...

i've heard r-rated stories regarding the otterslide area :D something to do with that cement slide that's angled perfectly.
