A Marine is Beheaded in Iraq

Semper, remind me; is there any provision or circumstance where a soldier in the field can be decapitated by the other side legally through international treaty?

There is no doubt Al Queda is in Iraq now and that these actions will incur the wrath of the US Marines. I believe that was a grave tactical error.

Prayers for him and his family. The human condition is a dark one indeed. I'm very sorry to hear this, Semp et al:(

Maybe now that it has happened to someone with an Arabic name, the chickenshit mainstream Iraqis will come out of their years-long terror and start ratting these bastards out.

My wife's cousin is a SEAL in Baghdad. He'd like nothing more than to meet a few of these insurgents.

When you give the US Marines a cause beyond vendetta, you are not talking about a million odd armed men and women or so; you are talking about United States foreign policy.

I would have pull my grenade pin if they capture me, at least I'll take a few with me for a Star Trek journey.

I hope mother green stomps their guts out. I want those leaders killed Braveheart style... and no death until they renounce...

Hayv!!!! Means, "It is true. I agree!" Those bastards deserve at least that!

All of the beheadings has caused me a deeply profound anger and the beheading of one of our Marines goes even beyond that!
I pray that the results are like what one of the Japanese Generals, I think it was, said, something like, "I fear we have awakened a gentle giant and that by doing so we have made him very, very, angry."
If this doesn't open some doors on the US Policy of warfare in Iraq I am going to be very ashamed of our government and especially our President!
This goes beyond sad but when I read that he had been captured I knew almost without a doubt that this was going to be the end result.:(
The response to this by the newly formed Iraqi government should tell us loads. If they don't respond with more than a great deal of force to deal with these bastards then we will know that nothing has changed there except a change of leadership.
And if that's all that's been accomplished then none of them deserve any mercy whatsoever!!!!

There's a difference in fighting the opposition and just plain outright murder!
I wouldn't oppose amnesty for any true opposition fighters but I damned sure would for the bastards that have commited kidnapping and murder, let alone other crimes, in the name of freedom for their country!
And the bastards that have commited these beheadings are outright plain old adulterated murderers!

I'm with you Gin. If they give these bastards that have commited these murders amnesty then like I said in my first post, "The response to this by the newly formed Iraqi government should tell us loads. If they don't respond with more than a great deal of force to deal with these bastards then we will know that nothing has changed there except a change of leadership.
And if that's all that's been accomplished then none of them deserve any mercy whatsoever!!!!"

I know how I felt when the Highway Patrolman knocked on my door to let me know my son had been killed on his motorcycle.
I cannot even begin to imagine how this Marine's folks must feel right now! My heart is on the ground for them.:(

...Could someone explain why we are still there??...

Those who supported the war said we should spend American resources and American lives to "make the Iraqis free". So I guess we are still there because they are not yet "free".

It's interesting that many of these war supporters who wanted to "make the Iraqis free" now want to "kill them all".

Just emotions.

Very few battles, few paths are as clear as Nazi Germany or a virgin bride on the honeymoon; we do the best we can as the world changes. We are fighting terrorism. A free Iraq is a major historic event in the Middle East and a huge blow against militant Islam.

I've noticed that. I read that when questioned about the genocidal actions that he took against the Shiites and the Kurds that Saddam has defended himself by saying he needed to take drastic measures to preserve order in the country. I believe that the kill them all response of many people shows that a lot of folks agree with his tactics in their guts.

On the poor fellow killed. It's really sad and most of those guys are so young. Maybe the Iraqui government will have more success in finding the bad guys than we have since they know the culture.

The infuriating thing is, this kind of murder is hard to explain to some people who haven't been paying attention.

What I mean is, there is beheading and then there is beheading. I remember reading that in WWII, when the Japanese captured a spy, or enemy soldiers that they admired for their courage but felt they had to die but with honor, they chose to behead them with their swords, even though that concept was abhorent to Western minds who might have considered the firing squad the most humane way to die.

By the logic of those Japanese officers, they were honoring their enemies by ending their lives as they would wish theirs to be ended, with one swift very quick and I have to suppose very painless ending. Personally, I can think of far worse ways to go.

THIS however, is not even remotely similar, and in fact they use the beheading as a terror message itself. Dull knife, sawing away, and as slow as possible in order to afflict the maximum pain and terror on their victim and his family.

I have to do my best to try and follow the ideals and teachings of my religion that tells me to try and love my enemies and forgive those who would despitefully use me, but the best I can personally do is pray that the Lord's own judgment will descend on them, find them wanting, and sentence them to the same horrible death followed by damnation!
