Soon, it appears that Schrade (USA) will only be a memory and the factory collection will not be in a museum.

From a SMKW announcement on e bay:

"IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!!! Schrade Collectors, very soon we will begin offering items from the Schrade Factory Collection. I know we have showed you guys a lot of neat stuff but, to quote a famous song, "We've only just begun". You will soon have a chance to bid on items like the 1,000,000th LB7 lockback to come off the production line in the Schrade factory, the serial #000 75th anniversary stag clasp knife with custom filework by Herman Williams, the photo sample set of the WWII stag collection, several unique one of a kind prototypes and shop samples, extremely rare antique and vintage knives as well as much, much more. All of these items will include Certificates of Authenticity signed by Kevin Pipes, President of SMKW and Steve Koontz, Vice president of the Collectibles and T.V. Sales. Don't miss out on these auctions folks, this Schrade stuff is some of the hottest on the market today. These auctions will start on October 10th."

While I have held out hope that Kevin would recognize the value of the collection intact, I have realistically been expecting this since first learning that he acquired it.

The tenth is a week from this Monday. 100 years of knife history will be like a dandilion on the wind. I do hope some of the serious collectors here can salvage some important pieces.

It will be interesting to see the WWII set he advertises since I own it. ( Check the Archives for article and pics) I did not bid or buy the Schrade collection since I had been informed that one of the stipulations for his purchase was that he would keep it intact. I knew I could not afford to buy it and keep it together. The Tennesee Mafia with the commy friends strikes again. I wonder if I can buy a roll of Mr Pipes certificates of authenticity if they are like his word, I would like to sit in the smallest room in my house with a roll of them in front of me so that upon need I could put them behind me. LT

No big surprise, is it? Money talks.

While I'll likely bid on some of the stuff, I'd rather have none of it, and know that it was all together in one place, intact. I will be careful however on what I buy. Thin line between half finished or oddball 'collectibles' and things with real honest collector value.

Which brings up a very valid point: Who is to say exactly which items were legitimate components of the collection, and which may have been "salted" to make the proverbial pie bigger?

Codger

This guy is not smart enough to salt anything. He simply does not know what he has or bought since his entire motivation has and is MONEY. There is a set there, however he does not know what was produced and why. I have seen it I know by memory what is there, on the day his trucks were on the way to pick up the collection I was taking pictures of the front room on display . the articles he mentions were in another room. I have a set of pictures some where, taken of the board room with everything in the front room. He just is unaware of what was made and you know what, I don't feel like explaining it. By the way in fairness his Herman Williams are correct. Schrade bought Hermans entire collection amazing stuff. The real shame is in the Miranda collection acquired by Baer when he took over Imperial these which included automatics and TRUE historical artifacts which should be saved for history these will be or have been diseminated to private collectors already. You see normally when something like this hits the market all the buyer has is the sellers word. In this case I can assure any one who is interested I will be happy to offer whatever information or opinions I can. LT

Does anyone have any opinions about which pieces would be the best to
try and bid on?

Not surprising that Taylor would break up the collection to try and make a
"fast buck" As Joplin said " i'll show you a neat trick if you want to make a
fast buck, put your dollar bill on a mirror, that'll double your money fast and
you can lose it even faster when you take your dollar back"

Is the auction going to be available online or just in person?

Taylor is, I believe, an entirely seperate entity...Taylor brands LLC. SMKW has the collection, that is Kevin Pipes.

You have more information right now than anyone else no one else besides me knows what is there. ( Sorry there may be others ) Even most employees were never allowed to see some of this stuff. In my case due to my affliction what ever I saw was indelibly inked in my mind. I can assure you Pipes and his minions really do not understand what they have or what the provanance of each piece is. It is like a fellow who finds a pirate ship full of gold . He has the gold but if he could talk to the pirates on the ship and the captain and the people who minted and owned the gold he would have it all. If you see something email me ( if you feel I can impart something positive ) . The Williams stuff will go high but is unique and quite nice. His ( Pipes ) certificates in many case means nothing they are like boxes and paperwork it is and will always be the knowledge of the item that makes it what it is and the buyer should depend on knowledge of quality and knowing the item rather than a written guarantee which is only as good as the knowledge and honesty of the guarantor. LT PS Codger just saw your listing No offense but those two Tennesee fleas infest the same hound.

Should have bought 2 and made a double ply roll. About all they have ever been worth as I think we have all said before.

I am wondering if the "special" stuff they are bringing out may be other than the collection. Stuff they found in bins and boxes etc... I have a set of pictures LT took + the pictures in the flyer for the auction to look at and we always have LT to let us know if it was in the collection.
Guess we will need to wait and see.

By the way if you buy the 13 colonys ( Parker Schrade) edition out of the collection It is the one I sold Schrade since they needed one. LT

That is rough LT, :(

does anyone know if the auction will be online as well as in person?

If it is online then maybe some things can be salvaged and bid on at a fair
price. After all we have the walking encyclapedia of Schrade knowledge
right here on this forum. (smooch smooch LT :D ) I personally would like to
try and bid on personal correpondence complete with signatures and that
describes a product line or warranty. Or maybe some protos of my Schrade
favorites or at least early models.

From the wording in the announcement I believe that SMKW will be placing these knives on e bay.

I also think they may be shooting themselves in the foot.

I just noticed the "..Koontz VP of televsion sales...." in the announcement
of the auction.

Home Shopping Network here they go.

Aw Heck I have several more sets besides the one I sold Tim, 13 colonys ( original main dude in charge of this site ) The point is that an uninformed public is what is wrong with the whole market. It is the reason prices went nuts a few months ago. The fact is no one really knows what they are looking at. It will be fun to watch. There is apparently only one point of contention to what Pipes says since the Buyer must go by his statments. I also have made direct statments saying that I owned items he claimed he was going to sell . Why not call my bluff, I will admit if shown I made a mistake. How about Mr Pipes. REMEMBER the golden rule them that has the gold make the rules. LT

No offense taken, LT. I just think it is important to keep straight who is who in the zoo. Of course it makes no difference to the killed whale whether it is the tiger shark feasting on his head and the great white on the other end, or vice-versa. But it behoves spectators dangling their feet in the water to know.

Codger

Too bad they do not take some of them and put them in the knife museum down there, or at least somewhere. It would be a shame to part out that history and sell it, but its all about the money, especially when it comes to smoky. Not surprised at all.

As far as I know I've never purchased from Smoky (unless Ebay counts), but I got their 172 page Christmas catalog in the mail today. There has been some discussion on Taylor marketing....well page 52 and 53 show 24 patterns of the OT's and UH's so that's a marketing start any way. Another thing that was news to me (big deal) was the page 50 layout of Schrade Walden and Walden Knife Co. knives. Where did these guys come from? The ad has three or four Made In USA logos on the page. The Taylor stuff just has a note "imported". I take it from the ad copy the the Schrade Walden and Walden stuff is made from raw materials, steel, handle material etc. from the final auction. Just roused my curiosity. Some of you guys in the know, please enlighten me a little further. Thanks.

Paul

Same Tenn mob. Pipes owns Walden Knf Taylor Schrade Walden they are being made by Camillus or Colonial I forget. I posted the info a while back I even quoted what they were paying to have them done. That goes back to why Canal street was stopped from using Walden Knife as its name it should all be in the archives but, it dosent matter it is almost forgotten now and soon will be, as will things like Pearl Harbor and the Holacaust. Or a zillion other points of history. Any way that is your answer. LT
