Folks,

I started on this project recently and thought I'd share it with you folks. For those Little Giant fanatics out there this one of rarest you'll see.

In about 1995 Little Giant of Nebraska City had a run of Miniature hammers cast. There was only 13 cast in all. If anyone has been to Nebraska City and visited the shop they've seen Sid's. These are cute little hammers. Sid assembled the first few and also donated several to ABANA in the first years, but as of the last few years he sold off a few as just the frame and the fly wheel. On one of my last visits I noticed he had only one left. After having spent the last few years working with Sid on hammers and knives I approached him about building up the last one and he agreed.

Hopefully my first pictures attached themselves. They will show what I've started with and hopefully indicate the size. The hammer positioned next to it is a 8 ounce ball pein.

I saw one in his video as a demo.

I have to say, I want one.

With the popularity of tractor toys and machine tool scale models, I can't be the only one.

Wow, that thing is COOL. This should be a great thread. Can't wait to see it running. Will you be able to forge tiny stuff with it?
 
Thanks, for the interest. As for seeing it run that will be up to Sid. It will be operational and I'd love to see it run, but we run into a problem as to what speed it needs to run at and proper spring to put in it. I'm actually going to use a little heavier spring than Sid has in his.

If you'll notice from the first photo's the frame is actually machined with the v-way and lower sow block cut. I did not do this. It takes a little large mill than I have.

Here are some of the parts that I have made. Arranged in the corresponding order to the Little Giant parts diagram. Tomorrow I to post some of the jigs and fixtures I had to use to make a few of the parts.

Here's a photo of the frame primed for painting. When completely dry it actually turns black. The primer I used is a rust converter you can pick up at any automotive supply store paint really sticks this stuff.

I thought DHIII might enjoy the look of a purple hammer. We've had an on going joke since I helped deliver his new 100.

Hahaha.

Dave this is very cool stuff!!! I freaked out when I first saw Sid walking around a knife show with one of these little bitty hammers. Must have been 14-15 years ago.

Funny thing, I knew this question would come up. Friday morning I walked into our local post office with the ram to be weighed up. It weighed 15.9 ounces. I think it's safe to call it a "POUNDER". I then had to engage in a lively discussion of Little Giant hammers. (Fun fact our rural mail carrier has his grandfathers 25# LG, that he used in his blacksmith shop in Berchard Ne. As far as their Motto goes rain snow nor dark of night goes, Little Giant discussion will slow it some what.)

Today's photo shows the fly wheel detailed out and a photo of the hammer next to one of Don's calenders.

So, it's a "pounder pounder." That flywheel looks good. I see it says "The New Little Giant," and without a removable sow block, it's pretty near a copy of my 50 in style.

Don's got calendars? I didn't know that. Now I want one, I'll put it next to MY LG.

Who would of thought paint adds that to the outside dimensions. Maybe I have it set up a little to tight?

I now feel bad about not taking pictures of the bearings when I poured them. (Salem)
