A month without T.V. and counting...

Well - my wife and I have gotten rid of the T.V.

Well - it is still there, the kids watch PBS now and again, but I have not watched anything but the odd 10 minutes of a show before realizing I am not interested and turning it back off.

We are back to local channels and the CD channels - it is only 15 a month.

I don't miss it at all. I am on the computer too much probably, but mostly that is just to check up on Rick and my kids that he raises (Rick, can you buy my kids some new shoes? He is so cheap some times.) and feel better about my life because I am not him.

I am glad I found some people on this board that prompted me to let it go.

Good for you TF. I stopped paying for TV about 5 yrs ago and stopped watching it period earlier this year when it went digital. It wasn't a big step for me though, in the last 5 years I watched maybe 10 hours a year...all of which were college FB or BB games. It was one of the best decisions I ever made.

Yeah - personally I am in the same boat. I can't remember the last time I actually watched TV. However, we do have cable TV - the teens protested when I got rid of it last time and we have the cable/internet deal happening. But personally, I just never watch it. I do spend gratuitous amounts of time on the internet unfortunately (like now).

The one thing I do use the old set for is watching DVD's. Before I was a knife nut, I was a movie-aholic. I have a pile of DVD's (>400 or so) and don't mind watching them a few times in rotation. I still buy DVD's but not at the frequency I used to.

Nice stuff, Talfuchre!

It gets easier with time. I have not owned a TV set for at least four years, and have no intention of getting one in the future.

Keep fighting the good fight,

- Mike

No TV can be liberating...and productive. I didn't have TV for years...until I got married. Until then I read all the time. Now, she watches TV and I dick around on the computer. Don't know which addiction is worse. With one there's a monthly charge coupled with brain fade, and with the other there's unlimited shopping potential coupled with brain fade. Oy!

I should be moving into my new (to me) house soon. Im dead set on not hooking up cable. As it has been for awhile I turn it on as soon as I get up, listen to the news ,then Im upset the rest of the day. Frig it.

No TV....How do y'all get your fresh air without the Outdoor living network ?????:D

Coming up on 30 years without TV for me...I read, listen to the radio and music. But, most of all, I am outside.:D

Congrats if this makes you happy ,I fully support ya bro,
I not sure why exactly,TF could you explain why to me ... I must of missed a previous thread or something...
I understand the Boob Tube thing and ruining your mind ,blah blah blah but never mind I guess I am not following this correctly ?

I don't have cable right now, but there are a few shows that I watch online. I enjoy most shows on Discovery and The History Channel. Cities of the Underworld and The Colony both come to mind. You can learn a lot from some shows, you just have to be choosy.

Tony,

I asked how many do not watch TV a while back and found out a BUNCH do not. It was the inspiration I needed to make it happen.

Same here, I've found with 84 cable channels there's still very little on that gets my interest. I spend lots of time on the computer instead, and unplug the TV most of the time, we're one step away from getting rid of the thing.

We had 13 channels only at first...I found myself uninterested in anything on.
Then my wife made the decision to upgrade and get the history channel, discovery, and learning channels because of the also available access to several PBS channels for our youngest. Now with however many channels we have I seldom find anything i am interested in. I'm just not a T.V. person. I spent too many years living off the grid. While I do enjoy the internet for the camaraderie in the survival and bushcraft sections of a few forums I'd rather spend more time off of my @$$ and out practicing old techniques looking for tweeks, and learning new ones. I prefer the hum of the insects to the hum of electronics.

Now it's time for you to decide on a new STM or Shift Tech clutch cover.

Ever lose a pant leg to that Ducquezinart? lol

Cool on the no TV thing though. Good stuff Tal. I wish I could give up the boob tube, but then I'll go through "How It's Made" DT's. I can't handle it. I need that show.

I like that show too - but then I realized I knew how knives, meat, and boobies were made - that covered my interests for me.

I'm glad to see some weird folks around here such as I am  Last time I watched TV was before I left the college, so that's more than 5 years. I never watched TV much, but when I moved from the dorms to start a life on my own, I simply realized there's better stuff to spend money on than a TV, and it soon faded from my wishlist definitely. I still don't feel like I'm missing something... I have more time to chat on "teh interwebz" :D and to look for the information I'm interested in, not that which an editor chose for me and that which some reporters screwed up...

When we moved into our new home in January this year, friggin' Comcast screwed-up on our cable install so badly that it took over 3 months (or was it 5 months?) before we finally had TV reception. I didn't miss it much, although we did have our Netflix subscription during that time.

I typically watch news shows anyways, but the wife likes here reality TV shows, so I do get pulled into Top Chef and Project Runway. But I don't think I would miss TV too much if we lost reception again.

While I have to agree that most of the TV world is a wasteland, it's football season, for God's sake. I can't live without watching the Chargers play. Now after football season, who cares about TV?

LOL...good catch. I have a Speedymoto Sellwood on it now but that's a recent addition and only because I got a killer deal on it (obviously not my bike in the pic but you get the idea). I went about three years w/o a cover and never had a problem. I actually tried to get it to bite hold of a loose piece of cloth and couldn't make it happen.

I stopped watching the pros in '92 IIRC when I came to the conclusion that they were a bunch of overpaid crybabies. I don't miss it a bit. Try it, you too can do it. :)
