A morning's tinkering

Great work, Jack- it almost looks like it was meant to be the way you fixed it.

It's a cobbler's last. When I was a kid every house had one, they were known as a 'hobbing foot' for some reason. They were always useful as a small stiddy and for all sorts of other things. There are still a lot of them about here, but people think they are a device for holding doors ajar.

I guess people must have repaired their own shoes at home? My mom bought a little wooden chest with a set of the feet and the stake they sit in years ago. Since then they're one of the most common things I see at antique stores. Maybe every house had one over here too, though it's news to me.

Jack,
A hobler is a person who is lame. Hob nails are nail with a large, flat head used in soles of shoes to protect them.

Also, you need to make yourself a proper stiddy. It would make pinning that shield a breeze.

Looks great! Nice job, for sure! That's one that any of us would be proud to carry!

Thanks again guys

Thanks Jer. Yes, I think they would have been common household items. I can remember, as a young kid, putting steel 'segs' onto my shoes and boots :)

Absolutely. You'd think the Yorkshire markets would be awash with them. I might see if I can get a blacksmith pal to make me one up. Or just take the knife over to Sheffield the next time I visit and borrow one! Great set-up you have there
