A new bladesmith few know about

One of the neatest things about this thread is that it has gotten Jimmy more involved in this community. That has to be a good thing.

Amen!

Well :)

Here's the link to a few pics of Maggie's finished Bowie / camp... along with a shot or two of a small utility that she also forged.

Keith and Roger... thanks for the kind words and the welcome. I've lurked on the forums for a long time, but for the most part keep pretty quiet. I have the tendency to open my mouth only to change feet :p

There is so much good information here that an old geezer like me has little to add of value, but if I can put a sensible word in here or there, I'll try to do it.

I'll say thanks once again for all the support and encouragement that you guys have given Maggie. You know how it is when you first start out. Nothing seems to be any good even when it actually is. So you've done a world of good for someone who is already a fine smith and will eventually be a fine knifemaker.

Cheers! :)

Looks like an awesome knife, Jimmy. Who did the polish and the handle-wrap?

That hamon is a killer. She did a good job of the heat treatment, for sure.

Hey, Joss :)

Maggie did the whole knife... start to finish. Cut the stock to length, welded on a working handle, forged the blade, ground it, clayed it, hardened and tempered it, polished the blade and wrapped the handle. I don't remember if I posted the two fototime albums of her forging the blade and polishing it since Keith had posted a number of pics I'd sent him... but if you'd like to see the pics, I'll include the links.

Enjoy!

I'll try to get a response off to your last email tonight. Don's computer is still down as far as I know, so still no pics of Dragonfly :(

Cheers!

It does look good. I personally would prefer it with a guard and stag or wood handle, but it looks fine just the way it is.

Keith , im normally with ya, i like a guard and traditional (what ever that is) handle... but the cord wrap and double turks head is about the most secure for heavy use ive experienced. Plus when you see one of Jimmys (in this case Maggies) knives up close and personal, a cord wrap just "flows" with the organic blade shape and style better IMO.

If i could tie a better knot i would do plenty of them. :grumpy:
