I have a new favorite for the bow drill fire. The Mexican Sycamore (platanus Mexicana). It makes a coal in just a few seconds (well under 20 seconds) and gives a long lasting well formed coal. Also - very little material is used per fire - so the same socket tends to give many fires.

Thats cool TF. Nice post!! Thanks for sharing, Where is this tree native to? Is it all over the US?

I am not sure of the distribution. I know it is common in Texas - AND - they planted a shed ton on my campus - a few of them die now and again - and before they take them away and replace them - I strip them of branches. ;)

Better starting fire and making projects than filling some landfill.
