A new fixed blade steel recommendation please.

I like the way Bradford does their 3V. It holds an edge pretty well, it's not bad about corrosion, although I keep mine dry even if it's not always oiled, and it's double tough.

Does the micarta handle hold moisture? I imagine it would keep the dampness against the blade longer than a G10 would?

You know... I don't know. I never thought of that. I've used the 3D micarta handles some, even gotten them wet. But I never checked to see about any corrosion on the steel under them and I don't have the 3V Bradford any more. These days I mostly use my M390 with CF original profile scales. It's an easier grip in my old, stiff hands.

Sorry I can't help with that, but I'll bet Brad can give you some guidance there. In my experience, he'll answer emails within 24 hours, if not sooner.

if I may, what did you not like about the White River Backpacker Pro?

I like the look of the Guardian 3.5, just not and the handle shape. I was hoping to get it in 3V steel (over the M390).

The Backpacker Pro's handle isn't very hand filling, the choke up grip can feel unstable for heavier tasks.

Thank you for all your input. I did some more reading and watching. I've decided to go for either the Guardian 4.5 or the Guardian 5.5.

There are two options, 3V and Elmax. Can someone chime in with their experience in sharpening the 3V and the Elmax in Bradford's steel?

I have medium, fine, ultra fine ceramic rods I use for sharpening at the moment.
