a new folder from a Japanese company

Mr.Wutitiz if you are still there, here is the specifications for the folder nami. overall length 216mm blade length 90mm weight 106grams.

So that's about 3.5" blade and 3.7 oz. if my arthmetic is right--close to perfect for an EDC (every day carry) for me. I might buy if I see one at a show or on a purveyor site.

I rarely buy a new knife, but if it's a big step forward in funtion I will. I rarely buy a new knife, but when I do it's good. If you pass on the 9 latest and greatest $100 knives, then you can afford the $900 knife when it comes up.

Thanks for the translation Ryosuke...appreciate it.

The guy from Rockstead was showing a few of his knives on a local knife show last week.
In short: the build quality is amazing, general feeling is very very precise and the handles feel luxurious.
And the blades of several models look unique. They have a very high carbon content and it may be that's why they have the look of a dark mirror. Very high tech. These blades are very hard (hrc 65 or more!) and that causes my one worry (next to the price): are these blades so hard that they are brittle? They also won't sharpen easily with most normal tools.
Actually my fave knife on display was a LOVELY small (and still expensive) gentleman folder, with a sculpted titanium handle. This one has a normal looking blade, but it's ZDP189 at around an amazing 67 hrc:

Yes, they are very expensive but in my perception they are up there with the best brands and customs. Worth twice the price of a Sebenza? Well, while acknowledging the quality, I never really cared for Sebenzas and I could potentially see myself saving up for a Rockstead. To be honest, "potentially" here means possible but unlikely as I would rather spend the money on a short holiday trip.

DLT is the coating.

Steel is YXR7, that's a top notch hi-speed steel that compares with A2 in terms of toughness while hardened around HRC63.

I love their fixed blade designs, and they are hand made for a large part.

Yet, wouldn't spend that much for those knives, but they are probably no worse than some customs that go for higher price.

DLT571 is different then ZDP189 or YXR7. Usually they cost around $450. This is special steel (even for Roakstead) they use before only on their superknife WILDERNESS-HUNTER.

They have shell like edge - one side of the edge flat another convex. Grind as I understand flat.

Busse edge is something very different - dullest knives out of the box I ever see, it is hard to call edge IMHO.

Thanks, Vassili.

Vassili, do you have one of the Wilderness-Hunter knives? What do you think of it? What are the characteristics of DLT571?

No, I have nothing from Roakstead especially DLT571 (too expensive for me).

This is what Anton did with it (not from Roakstead but from Kitano himself, which is almost impossible to get, Roaksted making his knives like Wildness Hunter in cooperation (and less expensive - can you imagine what original costs?)):

hooo wow that's an amazing knive. dazzling blade. I can't find words that best describe the knife but it just looks awesome. I like the rainbow like finish on the blade.

great post noz2002--made my day. Look how smooth the cut is (second to last pic). I read once that paper is made with clay binders and is actually much harder to cut than most people realize. That's why, if you test most knives by slicing paper, it will very quickly lose its edge and start tearing instead of cleanly slicing.

Alas I also see on their site that the Wilderness-Hunter is listed as discontinued.

DLT571 is the diamond like transfer coating referred to on their website....not the steel....it coats the YXR7 to prevent rust and to give a polished edge effect which assists smooth cutting....their web site mentioning the coating as the steel on certain knives is an error....this information was confirmed by their CEO in e-mails to a buyer on British Blades....

Check Out the custom knives by Kitano ( himself ) sold on Nordic Knives web site....they are cheaper than the Rocksteads fixed blades top models and also are made in Cowry X...
