A New Handle Material.... What Say You?

In order to conduct a proper "roof test" for a knife, you should have a galvanized tin roof and of course hot, harsh, direct sunlight until snow covers it upon which you leave it buried in the snow for a month or so.

You win then. I would die of old age before we had snow for a month. :( Oh well, it's a savage and uncivilized thing to do to a knife anyway... It's a wonder you weren't arrested. :D

Nice! I like the way the marbling echos the Damascus.

Is there a way to test it for longevity? Throw it up on the roof for a year, and see if it's effected by heat/cold/UV rays?

@r8shell with a lot of my customers its like tossing it on the roof for a year!! My ranching partner I always accuse him of digging in the dirt with his mammoth tooth damascus knife I made him. Dang talk about timing he just walked in the shop.

Thanks @VashHash I'll keep that opportunity in mind.

Thanks guys!!

Problem is @WinchesterRalox that I'm in the Peoples Republik of Kalifonica and am no longer able to use mammoth tooth or ivory. They might go extinct or something!

@ModocED I've always been of the bury em in cow manure in the return alley from the squeeze chute for several months and have 1200 lb cows run over them while so buried school of testing. Not so much the roof deal.

Works for me. Very nice knives in your first post.

Looks great Dave!
But you know I am a fan already and starting to get to the point where people could accuse me of being a shill for you! lol
Definitely works with the Damascus.

All I can really say is that it's a nice looking material.
I don't know what I like about it or how I'd describe it, it just looks nice.

I like it Dave! My first choice would always be your Sheep Horn, but for folks wanting a synthetic handle, this material seems to have a lot of character.

The new handle material looks good, but I really like the looks of that poco. Looks like a cool little knife.

It's definitely good looking Dave. I'm on the natural material bandwagon though. Your designs and execution are outstanding man. I really love looking at pictures of your knives. Keep up the good work :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Sorry guys took a while to get to individual replies. Was roping.

@Lapedog No I don't know what the mineral content is. In the suppliers literature they don't mention the type either. Zuma is available in several different colors too.

@Jolipapa I'd guess similar to micarta. Not heavy or light kinda right in the middle.

@Whetstone39 Feels more like smooth polished bone I would say but not slippery.

@Ramrodmb Gotcha. Sure as heck not gonna quit using those. Just looking for something a little different too.

Ernie1980 Ernie1980 Thanks. I've actually had several customers do that test!

Thanks Ed Modoc ED Modoc ED

Shhhh Dan Dan of Bazz Clazz Dan of Bazz Clazz I don't think anyone knows I pay ya. Seriously thanks.

Ratbert Ratbert Thanks. Yep sheephorn is one of my favorites too.

Yeah Sacto Sacto it went on the website and lasted about 20 minutes before it sold. The Cowboy is still on there and the Buckaroo hasn't been put on yet.

J JD Bear Thanks! I've got some leather work to do and then I'll be hitting the knives again. Got about a 100 blades back from heat treat and another 70 or so to get ready to go to heat treat.

I find the eddies and waves of the material to be pleasing to the eye, with the Damascus blades the knives look balanced, with the bolsters and pins really having some pop to them. You do nice work, both the knives I have seen photos of, and your leatherwork.:thumbsup:

Some might say the covers look to be marbled; however, some appear to actually have the appearance of grain throughout the covers. Interesting.

Dave, I'll be the odd man out and say I don't much like it. Reminds me of a half stirred can of paint. But that's me - if it's a durable synthetic material compared to naturals then I'm for it.

Edit, I'd want to hold one to see if my mind was changed.
