Mods, please delete if it feels like a been-there-done-that kinda thread. I looked back a few pages and did search (which turned up a trillion hits but none on the first few pages were recent).... So I thought a thread on for venting about negative knife comments might be.... cathartic.

Last sat night, I was at a friends house for a backyard fire, some BBQ, and beers. The woman who owned the home had two store bought and shrink wrapped bundles of wood in front of an outdoor chiminea. She asked me if I'd get the fire going and said she'd just run into the house to grab a knife to cut open the bundle. I told her I had it and I discreetly pulled out my small rat 2, and opened one of them up.... at which point two of my friends and my wife started a negative discussion on why someone would carry a knife at all. Culminating in one friend asking, "what kind of a guy carries a knife around with him?" to which I replied, "What kind of a pansie doesn't, and still calls himself a guy?"

Been there done that don't do it no more. I keep any larger folders and tactical knives out of site.

I do keep a small knife handy. Currently a Mnandi in a sheath. Few people freak out over that when pulled out for some task.

Your reply should have been along the lines of:
The kind of guy who doesn't have to run into the house to open Your firewood!

They happened to question why you carried a knife with a perfect example as to why you Do carry one being done with said knife... If that irony is lost on them, you need different friends.

When I am at social events I will keep a ZT0900 on me. When people ask me about what I do they almost always ask me what I am carrying. So I start by showing them the 0900. If no bad reaction I will typically show them my primary carry of a Bad Monkey, ZT0630, Sebenza 25 or ZT0562CF. When the second knife gets pulled someone around will always jump or give me a big bug eyed look. I usually look at them and say "be glad I left my bigger knives at the house!"

Sadly, this is the direction Our country has gone in. And I for one will continue to "carry" what ever I can legally carry. Come on yall we got to stick together! :D

Some might consider homophobic slurs ignorant too.

I used to (and still sometimes do) get that from friends all the time, but over the years, it's proven useful so many times that they shut up now. It probably never helped my case that my EDC has always been a Benchmade assisted opener with black G10 scales.

The other thing that happens is someone borrows it and I tell them "be careful, I keep my knives very sharp" . . . twice now, ten seconds later, "ouch!" and the blood starts flowing.

My country went this direction even before I was born. Spain, the place where you'd better not be caught peeling an apple in the street with your SAK...

I did actually get one supporter who commented that the very fact that they needed a knife and I had one was the answer / justification.

Marcinek. I know you've been here for a lot longer than me but the homophobic suggestion is unwarranted. That is not what I'm about. That's not was not what I was referencing when I made the comment nor what I meant when I recounted it here. The suggestion of the same is offensive.

I'm known amongst my friends and family as the guy who always has a knife on him...make that two knives and a multi-tool, lol. I have so many knives in my daily rotation that it's almost a game for some; "Hey Hack, show me what you're carrying today". I figure if the world is going to make me limit me to one woman, I'm damn sure gonna handle as many knives as I can!

Lately I've become more aware of sheeple attitudes however. I'm working in an upscale office environment for the first time in my life and I try very hard to be discreet. I don't pack big blades on weekdays, in fact I try to keep my knives at less than 3". I carry something I can deploy quietly; no waves or zip ties or thunking locks. Although I have a legal right to carry almost anything in my home State, that right could vaporize in a minute if corporate regulation come down with a thud.

If your friends look funny at you for having a knife, you probably have the wrong friends. I heard someone once say something similar to what bld522 posted above..."I carry a knife because I don't have claws and I'm not putting my teeth on everything that needs cutting!"

Ah! So you were referencing a garden plant (Viola wittrockiana) derived chiefly from the hybridization of the European Johnny-jump-up (Viola tricolor) with other wild violets.

I look crazy without the knife so they don't bother to question haha.

Which, like all wild violets, is much better cut from the garden with a sharp blade than plucked. All the more reason to carry a knife.
