A new language to learn...

At anything less than 100% the liner or frame lock is still applying constant pressure to the blade, which will result in less blade play and a safer lockup. When nearing 100% the lock has most likely lost most of this constant pressure on the blade and result in more blade play. I think in theory you are right to in that it may become possible for the lock to fail in that matter. 100% lockup can also cause the lock to get stuck on the far side of the liner making it a pain to unlock the knife after each use. Just my two cents.

I'll begin by apologizing for being a n00b to this forum.

I've carried and used knives for 40 years and thought I knew a thing or two, well we know how far assuming gets you!

My question is all the new (to me) terminology, is there a list put together?

I see about lockup percentages and such and would like some enlightenment.

I've searched the forums for a while to no satisfaction so feel free to point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance.

The highest, best and quickest use of a site like Bladeforums is its archives. No other site touches BF for its sheer amount of posters and information. Best of all, there is a lot of excellent information in the archives of this forums that you can read, sort and process quickly. Some of the information in the archives was written by knife makers, service providers, users, etc., not just enthusiastic collectors and is invaluable.

In many cases these days, an active thread is off topic in a 3 or 4 posts. If you ask about something like 1095 steel on an old knife in the General Discussion subforum, by response #3 or 4 someone will be talking about the price of corn in Peru and the next response would be even farther away. Then it becomes and one upmanship entertaining one another.

I would suggest that you find what type of knife you are interested in (although not limiting your interests) when you have a specific question and search the appropriate sub forum. The search function here on BF works pretty darn well, and even better it seems when you search the sub forum.

Another type of search can be found using this:

Enjoy the club house!

Dropbutt was just unofficially added. It describes a curved handle where the butt drops downward. Dropbutt.
