A New level of Sharpness - Push Cutting TP

Well, not as sharp as Ankerson's. 30 degrees inclusive or as close as I could get it. Sharpened to 3k polish tape.

Just wrap youtube tags around the 11 characters that come after the = sign in the code.
Quote my post to see how it's done.

2 Knives back to back, M390 and ELMAX, both at 32 degrees inclusive.

I went back over my Pacific Salt in H1 and Manix 2 S90V to the Edge Pro (my first two on the machine to push cut through TP like Ankerson, but the cut wasn't quite as clean. They sliced through the TP with extremely clean edges. I put some Mother's Mag polish on my 6K tapes and the knives got sharper, so for me the Mag polish is a nice help. Now I'm reprofiling one of my M4/Ti Millies to 13 degrees per side and I will see if I can get M4 way sharper with a polished edge compared to S90V (S90V takes a really sharp coarse edge but doesnt seem to like a polished edge like M4 or 52100) on the Edge Pro like I get with freehanding. If I get lucky I may come somewhat close to Ankerson's edges, but I have a feeling I have a long way to go to get near his level of proficiency on the Edge Pro. I do feel good about getting TP slicing edges on my first two knives on the Edge Pro. My freehanding experience definately helps me a lot on the Edge Pro, as I can track the burrs and make sure I completely get the scratches from the previous grit removed as I go along. Also, deburring is pretty easy, and that S90V Manix 2 was tree topping off of the 220 stone after deburring. Even though I can get that S90V to slice TP real clean when its super polished, I think a tree topping coarse edge suits it best as it is a very aggressive slicer at coarse grits and keeps on slicing a really long time. Taking the extra time to get it polished out just seems like you are running into the law of demising returns.

Back to the subject of the thread: Ankerson's edges are a new standard to aim for. Getting clean cuts while push cutting TP is sick. I can't wait to see if Ankerson's edges will get even sharper with the finer grit lapping films I'm sending him, though he is definately reaching pretty close to the limits of sharpness at this point.

It's just about being persistent. :D

I worry more about sharpness than perfect, the very edge of the blade has to be smooth as glass, so smooth it looks like it's rounded off under bright light.

The rest of the bevel...... If has some lines in it etc I really don't care, it will still be a mirror, you can shave in it etc. ;)

Man, I thought my blades were sharp until I tried the TP test... I sharpened my Sebenza (S30V steel blade) until it shaved my arm hair like it wasn't there but it snagged on the TP. I could get sections of the knife to cut through TP easily but nothing compared to what I saw in the videos. What angle do you sharpen your knives at? I use the Sypderco Triangle sharpener and I use the white stones on the 40 degree slots so that each blade is sharpened on 20 degrees.

I sharpen to 30 to 32 Degrees inclusive.

The knives in the video are at 32 inclusive.

So you can cut tp. Unless you are rationing it, or punishing it for a break through I just don't see why that sharp is necessary.

I can take a moderately sharp knife and stab the whole roll. That's good enough for my knives and tp.

Jim,

You've killed all pride I've had regarding hair-whittling edges.

Do you use the aluminum tape blank or the glass tape blank?

Just when I thought I was done giving money to Ben and Sierra...

Thanks, Jim! And way to raise the bar!

You can sell the smaller squares at a Cheryl Crow concert and make a killing! :D

Me too. I am so used to using float glass for lapping film that I was really happy when I found out there were glass blanks available.

Mike

Yes, they work a lot better than the other ones.
