Edmund Davidson just sent me the picture of his finished
new MEGA Full-Integral.

The total weight finished is 6 Pounds and 7 ounces (just under 3 kg!).

I shall follow up with the finished piece after it will be engraved...

All the best,

Wow, so perfect it's surreal - at first glance I thought it was a high quality render. Can't wait to see what it evolves into

Here is the story of another Mega Full Integral by Edmund Davidson:

“Gamblers”, 2011
This is the first of three huge and fully engraved Integrals, with fully scrimshawed Ivory
handles that are Edmund’s part in the Barter deal for the mega-truck seen below.
“Gamblers”, is the theme of this first knife in Edmund Davidson’s “Frontier Trilogy”,
the set of three of the largest and heaviest custom Art Integrals made in recent years.
All three have an overall hand-rubbed finish and are hollow ground on a 10” contact
wheel on the Burr-King Belt Grinder.
The thickness at the guard and the butt areas on this Integrals is 1 1/4” (286 mm),
with a blade thickness of 3/8” (9.5 mm) on all three.
The raw bar of 440C steel used for this knife weighed in at 52 pounds and 7 ounces (24 kg),
when Edmund started out with it in 2009. The guard from top to bottom is 5” (127 mm) and
presented a real challenge while holding it to the 10” grinding wheel for the hollow grind.
The ivory was scrimshawed by Linda Karst Stone, and the full coverage engraving
is Jere Davidson’s work. When finished, “Gamblers” weighed in at 5 pounds and 1/2 an ounce (2.4 kg).
Blade length 12 3/4” (324 mm), overall length 20 1/8” (511 mm).

This is part of the BARTER deal Edmund made for an amazing custom made truck that
was fully described and illustrated in my book "The World of Art Knives" Vol. II
And that is me standing next to it...

The truck is awesome. People took pictures of it when it was in the parking lot in KC for the ICCE and they were not knifelovers, just passerbys. I beleive the engraver, Jere Davidson is his kid.

That is remarkable. Is this also going to have material inlayed in the handle or left solid?

The knife has been completed. If handle slabs were to be added,
the steel would have been prepared for them in advance...

Here is what a fully engraved set of Edmund's Full Integrals
without handle slabs looks like:

While not my particular cuppa tea (if I'm wielding 7 pounds of blade, it had better be a sword), I have to say that this presents as a stunning work of art just as it was in the original post. The simple perfection of the piece in its initial form makes a compelling and unique statement.

Almost as if this had transformed itself into a weaponized sculpture:

When Edmund makes a knife he really makes a knife. When it come to knifemaker/engraver 'teams', Edmund and Jere are among the very best.

Not related, but best of friends and two of the finest fellows one could ever hope to meet.

Wow that first knife is something special. I thought of the same thing Roger posted when looking it over. I can't think of one practical use for it because of its weight and the fact that you could probably scratch it by looking at it funny. But it sure is pretty and quite unique.

I liked your "weaponized sculpture" description, Roger!

And for those (few) who do not know Edmund Davidson of Virginia USA, he has
his Integrals embellished for many years by the same two artists, Jere Davidson
who lives 2 hours drive away does all the engravings on his Integrals using
the classic hammer & chisels technique. Linda Karst-Stone does all the
scrimshaw work on his ivory handles...

Here are pictures of Jere and Linda from the fully illustrated in color book
"Edmund Davidson the ART of the Integral Knife"
that I created for him in 2008 with a detailed WIP of making a full Integral,
displaying many of the knives he made and telling the exciting stories related
to this amazing man.

The deluxe printing of the book is available directly from Edmund.

Edmund usually makes "regular" size beautiful Full Integral knives... :)
Here is a set of three amazing pieces he made for me with a special logo
commemorating his 25 years of Integral knife making....

And here (below) is one tiny (ivory handle) Full Integral that he gave me when the book was finished.
Notice the truly awesome grinds on this little piece...
