Hello good folks,
I've been browsing the Bladeforums for some time now and have recently decided to join in the good talk of knife-making. It is my sincere hope that perhaps there are some other makers in Western Massachusetts or at least within 8 hours drive of here that I might over time get to know a bit. As for initial introductions my name is J and I'm honored to be here on this forum.
Knifemaking is a rather new trade for me; I began making knives about 2 and a half years ago when a local maker hired me to be his shop assistant. I basically stumbled right into making knives, for most of my adult life I've been a devout woodworker and artist who does a lot of construction and farming to earn a living. My interest began when I wanted to be able to make some of my own wood working tools. My mentor, who had a similar introduction to the making of knives, saw in me a kindred spirit and scooped me up. Due to unusual circumstances I quickly went from assisting to full on knife making and as a result, I've logged a fair number of hours on a grinder and was thrust into gaining skills in most facets of making and selling full tang knives using the stock removal method. Recently some tides have turned, as they often do, and I find myself in a position where I'm seriously planning the initiation and operation of my own knife making company. My dreams are big, but realistic and I am looking forward to expanding my understanding of skills, history and methodology of making knives.
It is my hope that ya'll are welcome to a new kid on the block. I've come here as a young man interested in carrying on the tradition of making knives and hope to meet others who enjoy the same.
greetings,
J
