Hey guys, wanted to show you all my new setup, I down sized as you can see, But still have everything I need. As soon as I can I'm going to trade out the gator for a 110.
Next time I'm out I'll take some pictures for you all.
The plactic bag is the survival kit, with everything from a whistle, to fishing line to fuel sticks. All kinds of tinder, matches and a lighter, a wood jig saw blade, and razor blade. Also some tylnol, bandages and water treatment drops bottle. And if your wondering the black case is a medical kit.

Here's everthing ready to go, Also I forgot to add the things in my pockets, a kechain with some brass wire and a led light, also a lighter and wet stone.

Another thing is that I don't carry a pot, just a little teloscopic cup( not there either sorry) You can use that in the same way, But im still working on whats here. Every time I go out I think of something else to improve on what I have.

When I was out I tried out the wetterling and found out it has an amazing chopping ability. On A frozen birch tree, it chewed rite through it. And it light enough that on smaller branchs(1"-3") 1 to 2 chops cleans right through them, It holds a great edge as well.
But when I get again I'm going to try the buck and the leatherman extensivly, And take lots of pictres of course

Hey Fonly,

Glad to see the kit coming along. I've never owned a 110, but I have a 112 and it's a great little knife. Maybe one day I'll pick up a 110 - a lot of people seem to like them.

Recently I picked up the new Mini Mag LED and it really kicks butt. Much, much better than the original MM and much better than the Nite Ize upgrade. You might want to try it.

Cheers,

Doc

Looks like a very capable setup Fonly...I would only suggest a "nesting" cup/mug for your bag. Not sure of the dimensions, but one of the halves from the E. German 3-Piece mess kit may work. It would give you carry bag some structure and provide the capability to boil water.

doc, where Did you get your led mini mag, I had a quick thought at wall mart and picked up the red one, wasn't really aware of a led one, neat though.

And william, Im not really sure I need anything else, I just have a horrible time taking things I need, and things I want :)

I think you've got all the bases covered. Looks really reasonable to carry, too.

The only things I think I would add, are a canteen/cup, and a couple snack bars or jerky or something (I get hungry quick, heh.). Otherwise, my kits are all pretty much the same as yours.

I saw the LED mini-maglite for $20 at Fleet farm last night... I'm really starting to think I should have grabbbed one... I'm 100% sold on LED's. Besides, my g/f stole my regular one, so now I got an excuse, right?

BTW, you will not be disappointed when you get a 110. Although the weight of it may be noticeable for a while.

I've heard about the weight being a problem also, so I may end up wearing it on my belt, And as for the cup I have a teloscopic cup, its kinda "water boy" looking but it works. And as for snak bars I just forgot about adding that sorta thing, see what I mean though, theres always something to forget, well for me anyways ;)

Thanks guys.

I'm partial to Snicker's energy bars, it's pretty much a candy bar, don't kid yourself. Heh. See if you can squeeze in a packet or two of oatmeal or noodles. Maybe a foil pouch of tuna. Some boullion cubes. All very light and pretty small. If you're in a tough spot and have the time and resources to whip up a hot cup of alfredo noodles with tuna or chicken, I promise you won't regret it. Cocoa, coffee, or a couple tea bags, can be real pick-me-up as well. In hot weather, I like instant Gatorade. A small baggie of multi-vitamins can't hurt, either. Not to mention, fast-food-type salt/pepper/hot sauce/whatever.

I see no reason not to enjoy as much as possible, any time you spend in the woods. And I sincerely believe, if I was hurt, cold and hungry, a hot cup of cocoa would help :)

BTW Fonly, you're correct that if you carry the 110 on your belt, you'll hardly notice it. It's been my experience, that I got used to its weight in my back pocket real quick.

Hey Fonly,

Canadian Tire. Le Baron also has them, but I don't think you live around here? Toronto, Ontario area?

Here's something you all might find interesting:

It's a mini mag but it has a plastic sheath with four independently adjustable legs. You can set it up and adjust the legs for whatever angle you want while you're tinkering with something. I can definetely see it for woods carry. The mag comes out of the plastic holder for regular use. You can find it here (scroll down):

I'm not affiliated with any of these companies, just thought it to be a useful piece of gear. My .02

That looks great coldwood, definetly gotta get one of thouse. Do you know if the leg have little wires in them?, so they stay in place like one of thouse stringy toys that the arns and legs are adjustable.

And Doc, sorry nope, I'm in northern alberta.

sorry cold wood, I didn't take the time to read the site, anwsured my own question :)

haha, definetly, cocoa is the best pick me up I know of.

Fonly, your kit is coming along just great. I carry cocoa in my kit as well. Love the stuff, but what really gives me the energy I need, that will last longer than the cocoa energy, is raw honey. It also works on a medicinal level in many, many ways. Not the least of which is burn salve and antibiotic for cuts, etc. I keep it in a small food grade plastic, no leak container.

Nice Looking Kit, Definitley go for the LED mini mag I just got one at walmart they are a little bigger than the origional but stay bright way longer. Dont get the nite Ize conversion, its not really very good.

A water container of some kind seems like a good idea, either a bladder or a bottle.

Even a couple of good quality ziplok bags for liquid storage.

What I am doing in my PSK is keeping Fire, medical, and other pieces in separate ziplok bags, it keeps me organized, plus, gives me waterproof bags for liquid, or collection of tinder and a way to keep it dry.

Speaking of fire, Fonley...?? A BIC lighter? anywhere?
The Mag&flint is great, but, Fire x2 is better. Even some waterproof matches and a striker, make it Fire x3.

Doc and I are in firm agreement that you just can't have too many ways to start a fire. My personal minimum is Fire x3. but you will usually find me with 4 or 5 ways to make flame.

Nice set-up, you are getting your bases covered and in a compact way.

actually, I have a bic in the plastic bag, and 3 little zip locks rolled up with an elastic band around them(great for a fire too). And a lighter in my pocket :) And I cant forget the water proof matches I have in an old 22. 250. shell.
And I would have to say im in agreement with you two, three at a minimum. I know the fire and steel are fun to use, but when its late, i'm cold and tired and my bic isnt wet, im goin to use that. Also next chance I get im going to pick a zippo, their also one of mans great inventions ;)

Oooops! my bad! :o

I hear both sides of the great Zippo debate. can't decide.

They can dry out. I think Doc pointed out that you can carry a small can of lighter fluid, if you are packing or camping that should be no problemo. My USMC Recon buddy said everyone carries a Bic or two these days, due to the drying out part.

In a small PSK, I know I won't check the thing, it'll dry out, and I'll be stuck.
But, deep down, I still like Zippos. A little piece of Americana and they work good too!

I've been looking at the Bic, and wondering about it accidently having it's button depressed, while packed away, and losing it's charge of butane? Technology always has that potential to bite us in the butt.

hey, I hope I didn't mislead you. In the cold months, I carry both. Zippo and Bic. As the Happy Hooker once said, "You can't have too much fire."

Actually, I just made that up, but I thought it sounded good. :D
