A new thread about display options

I've looked through a lot of the old threads, and have some questions. I have a couple old khukuris that I was going to put up in some sort of shadowbox on a wall (high enough to keep kids away, secure enough that their height does not mean a lethal fall in case of earthquake, accident, etc.).

I saw mention of John Powell's wall, but all the image links in the archives are dead. Does anyone have any live links to pics of this wire-held method?

Has anyone done a glass-fronted shadowbox with one or two medium-size khukuris in it?

Thanks!

I remember threads for both. Can I dig up pics? Nope. Some help I am.

Just another post to increment the post count and show off my typing skilz. :D

Norm Abram made a tool chest a week or two ago on "New Yankee Workshop" that hangs on the wall - one that I think would make a splendid case for khuks.

If you saw the show, you know what I mean.

Anybody else?

Dan

If I remember correctly, I think John mentioned using wire, and picture hangers to get them to stay. Sometimes the simplest methods are the best. When I used to live in a room with wood panelled walls, I used to hang all my stuff up with just finishing nails, made it look like they were all floating.

What about a table stand? I got a "tourist" khukuri that would make a beautiful decoration. Granted, I wouldn't trust it as a khukuri, but that wasn't why I bought it...

I'd really like to get some ideas and see some pictures for displaying khuks as well. (which is just my verbose way of saying "Me too!") ;)

My priorities would be that, besides an attractive display, the knives be completely out of the reach of little hands and in no danger of falling...

Other than that... :) I do remember that someone made some fancy wood and glass cases for a couple of his khuks.

Here's what I'm talking about:

I'll never hang knives or khuks for display, so this is the perfect setup for me. Khukuris along the backside, Bowies/Larger Knives inside the doors, and folding knives in the drawers (except that I'm planning 2 full-width slide-out drawers). The dimensions for mine are different, but the idea is essentially the same.

Best-o-luck!

Dan

Here's a small section of one of John's walls - if you look closely, you may be able to see the wire loops.

I was just at Aaron Bros (art & framing chain store) and they have glass-front display boxes (they call them keepsake boxes or something) in assorted sizes for 50% off.
Your choice of black, white, cherry or "dark walnut." Dark walnut and cherry look like they would match a lot of the wood-handled HI models.

So the size that holds one average khukuri and sheath (knife out, crossing sheath at a diagonal) is only $15 instead of $30. I bought two to make good homes for the heavily-used 18th Century models I got from Mr. Powell a few months ago.:)

Well, I must have an attractive display because whenever I open my safe there's gasps of astonishment and phrases like "Oh $hlt," "Oh My Gawd" and the like.:) :p ;)
The danger of them falling into the reach of little hands is nill, but as far as falling, well, lets just say I'm real careful when I open the door to my safe.:D

I've seen it.
Have to say I didn't gasp when he opened the door.
Actually, I couldn't really distinguish how many blades are filling the safe.
It's like a magic curtain of khuks when he starts pulling them out one-
by-one from behind a montage of sheaths.
As the room starts to fill up with blades laying all over
you get the idea it's a cornu-copea with a neverending supply.
Then he gives comments like,
"I've been looking for this one."
"Do I still have this?"

Dean I opened the safe for my grandson who was here for not nearly long enough.
Seems like they might be breedin' in there. I have one that surely looks like a Kobra, but I don't recall ever ordering one so it must instead be a very light thin Sirupati that somehow I had forgotten or just plain didn't know I had. :( :)

I have a coat rack, and hang my khuk from the loop on the sheath...
one day i might give up on coats all together and just own lots of knives

It just came to me that perhaps I should designate Dean as an honorary ndn because of his sig lines.....

quote:__________________
", Regards, TIA, FWIW, Good Luck, Prayers, IIRC, You're Welcome, JMO, Happy Holiday, YMMV,
........ Dean"
"...the shining spark of truth cometh forth only after the clash of differing opinions."
"...in every manner search out the truth and {do} not insist upon [your] own opinion..."
"...it is in no wise permissible for one to belittle the thought of another..." - - - - Baha'u'llah"

It finally dawned on me that Dean is a lazy man with a concience just like most of us skins are.
Dean goes on to thank everyone, offer good luck and prayers, and etc all in his sig line without having to type it out each and every time. The thoughts he has posted below the first lines all are represenative of good ndn, as well as non-ndn, thought everywhere.
That sure enough qualifies Dean!!!!:D

Aho Cuz!!!!:D ;)

"Laziness is the mother of invention."

Thanks Cuz :)

I'm honored by the thought.

Aho!

Somewhere I had pics of two shadow boxes that one of the old hands here had posted more than a year ago. I don't think it used the glass in front, it was more of just a khuk frame. He had the khuk horizontal, then the k & c crossed, and then the scabbard, all secured with thin wire. Against a dark blue background it looked really sharp. I'd kinda want the glass there to keep the dust off (as you'd probably have to take the frame down anyways to undo the wires if you wanted to play with the knife), but I was also thinking of lettering "In case of emergency - break glass" on the outside :D
