A nice modern utility knife

I have that problem as well.

Well, the classic endura is like $60. Might be your best bet to try spyderco out. I would suggest a native though, unparalleled ergonomics and s30v at $70. The cheapest benchmades (mini griptilian) are now like ~$80.

My drawback with Benchmade is the Axis lock. I do worry about those Omega springs as from everything I've read they are the achilles hill of that knife. If I go benchmade I'm 99% sure it will be one of the Osbourne design reverse tantos or the mini onslaught.

I love the simplicity of the Spyderco. It just has such clean lines. If I go spyderco I like the Manix II, the Military and the Para Military.

I also am wary of the omega springs.

Of those, I've had a 940 Osborne, manix, and paramilitary.

940: really easy to carry, really smooth. Gets play easy, but can be adjusted. Mine came with uneven grinds and edge. It was also a little small in my hands. I am thinning of getting another, to see if I get better grinds and stuff.

Manix: the manix is really nice. It has the cbbl, which has the strength of the axis with a more sturdy coil spring (but is less smooth and has that plastic cage). It has perfect ergonomics when using and when not using the choil. The new version has a ffg blade. I like the manix.

Paramilitary: the compression lock is awesome, but it was too tight yet had play on the one I had. The blade is a great shape and is very sturdy. It was too small for my hands though.

I guess you could look at the Omega springs needing replacing as a good thing. With many of these other locks it seems like they would be harder to service.

The only kind of lock that has ever fully failed for me have been liner locks, and that was under gross abuse. However, I think any lock is difficult to fix. The problem is that the omega springs seem to fail note frequently than other locks, especially under normal usage.
