a nice pair of gloves?

after looking at my gloves after an outdoor excursion today, i came to the realization that i might be needing a new pair. the thumbs on mine are worn through, they have several burn holes from tending to the fire with the gloves on, and then today i was drying them next to the fire and the tops got a little scorched:eek: .

so, here is the criteria:

-it needs to be the style with the mitten that folds back if you need to do detail work with your fingers (i know other designs acheive about the same thing, but i really like this type of glove)

-a good grip on the palm.

-preferrabley some sort of natural exterior layer.

-fire proof

any suggestions?
thanks,
Brendan

Seriously though...why not some kind of leather glove rather than a mitten? I have a pair of Wells Lamont gloves that can handle tasks requiring average dexterity.

Mine are like these:

my fingers are freakishly long and skinny, so none of those types of gloves fit my hands properly. if i find a pair that fits in length, ist usually got way too much extra width, which tends to hamper the dexterity.

I have a similar problem except in reverse.
My hands are wide but my fingers are short, therefore if i find gloves that fit my finger length then they are uber tight across the palm.
And if i find a pair that are comfortable in the palm then the fingers sections are way to long.

Brendan,
Let us know what you find.
I have not tried one of those mittens where the top folds back.
Does anyone have any experience with them?

What are the gloves for/what kind of weather/temperature?

its never too terribly cold where i am. 15F at the coldest usually. mosture isnt really an issue, since we hardly get any snow. wind resistance would be nice though, as it gets really windy around here. id just be using them for general outdoor stuff. chopping wood, hiking, etc..

Why not go with a fingerless glove like the ones that are sold at Homedepot/ Lowes as work gloves (I can't remember the company name) then carry a large wool overmitten. I have used this set up quite effectively. Glomitt's seem to always fold back on my finger and get in the way. Also if you go with the layered effect you could use the fingerless gloves for three season work gloves. That's my .02 cents

Underarmour, makes some that the fingers fold back. My son had a pair, and he really like them.

I just got a pair of heavy duty Mechanix Wear gloves, they're leather with a double layer on the finger tips,I've been using them pretty hard the past couple weeks and they're doing ok.I can wear out a pair of regular Mechanix Wear gloves in a couple weeks time cutting firewood so we'll see how these compare. They are a little pricey $34.00 at Cabelas.I also see that Stanley sells a similar pair at Walmart for about $15.00 though,so I'll probably try them next.

I found a pair of Carhartt's at Dick's Sporting Goods on sale for $10. They help up well through putting up all the tree stands, splitting/cutting wood, and just general work

I did see the Carharts someplace recently also, they do look like a pretty good glove.
