A NYCKS report

RL checking in from the Big Apple...sorry I missed you guys, I was at the show yesterday from opening bell till almost closing...anyway, I scored a Farid (thanks to Larry @ Bladeart)...I hope to post a review by Friday (if my pics turn out :( )

Had a great time, was there Friday an hour early(it pays to buy a $10 honorary guild membership) till the show closed. Was great to see alot of friends again. Saw PhilL,BrianC,Nakano,Coop,Andy Prisco,Strider guys, Ernie,AncientSul, Atilla,Larry B and Ida,Knifenerd,Aquatimer,Kublai,Win Heger, and alot of other forum members.
Ernie does indeed offer a free Emerson production knife if you can close the #3 gripper and a custom if you can close #4 but he has no affiliation with them other than he likes their product so much that he sells them on his site. BTW, there's only one man, Joe Kenney, who has ever closed the #4 and only about 75 people in the world have closed the #3. Get busy training.:D
Picked up an Emerson waved kerambit and a Geno Denning hunter. That was it as I just got a Fowler Pronghorn a few days ago and was tapped out.
Cant wait for the March show!

Hey Chuck428, I think I was standing behind you when you said to Jerry (something like) "I'll have to take it" You guys are right, Jerry is a true gentleman & it was a pleasure to finally meet him in person.

Everybody, PhilL is a baaaaaad influence, while tabe sittin for PJTomes, he practically sold me one of PJ's knives. Then when PJ came back...I caved.
It is a neat little kitchen utility with jigged bone scales. It is really thin and it'll be my garlic knife ;)

I spent a good deal of time at Alex Daniels' table. Alex makes historical style repros/replicas/renditions, just my cup of tea!
His work is immaculate.

I was there Friday & Saturday from about noon to four. It was very crowded, I didn't get to get near the Strider table until 3 on Saturday.

To tell the truth...it is all a blur :)
A happy blur :D

Veritas: I'll have some pics up as soon as I can.

Ebbtide: You are right. When I spoke to Jerry and handled his beautiful knives, I couldn't help myself but to snatch up the biggest one he had.

That's right I'm BAD!
Just how much of a salesman do you have to be to sell a knife made by an ABS Master Smith for $50? ;)

Hey RL, were you the guy who thought you recognized me from somewhere? Then when we tried to elaborate on where you might have seen me it turned out that we're both BF members but that's not where you saw me either. Must have been the Blade Forums aura.

Oh, and if I ever manage to close the CoC #4, or #3 for that matter, I'd stand there and beat on my chest and do the Tarzan yell until everyone in the place gives me a knife.

Grapevine, it might well have been...there were a couple of guys who looked "familiar"...I'll try to post pics soon :)

Hey PhilL!

I had a feeling you might end up with one of those kits.:D Now your next job is to finish it and bring it to the March ECCKS so we can all cast a critical (not too much) eye on it. Good luck!

Tom Anderson: the jigged bone Mohawk is gorgeous! It was a pleasure dealing/talking with you. See 'ya in March.

Well I enjoyed this one much better than the ECCK show, especially since I came hoe with 4 new friends. The mission: Warren Osborne's table before he sold out, ACCOMPLISHED! But barely, purchased a lovely interframe with black pearl inserts and a Norris damascus Persian blade. The LAST knife he had available, why it wasn't sold before I got there was because of the knife Gods looking down on me. Warren was sold out in under 5 minutes. Found a "new" to me, older maker who had some very reasonably priced abalone and pearl lockbacks by the name of A.H. Daniels, very nice work at a very reasonable price. Found a Kouji Hara flipper from a dealer (always wanted one) and picked up an Al Mar prototype from Gary Fadden. All in all, a very successful show.

Hi Tom,

Rob, you could put 20 or so Pikuni's on the inside of a vest, and throw them at attackers, or insurance salesmen, ala a kung fu movie I saw years ago. Use a Raven in each hand to finish them off. The band breaker would come in handy if you encounter bad musicians. :-) Really, you guys would enjoy a taste of NYC. The NYC food would be a welcome break from the frozen moose meat you probably usually eat in March (that you are harvestiung now). Several natives, including me, would be happy to guide you guys around and/or furnish maps. I'll even buy you guys dinner one night, or some drinks, if you eschew eating.

How does the March show work for you folks? We'd really enjoy having you gentlemen come.

Alan

It was a good show. Stopped by Hossom's table, and the guy didn't talked to me about knive. We talked about the 'kangaroo's testicles key ring' and the 'frog skin pouch' which he had picked up earlier...

Saw and handled the Joe Szilaski/Ed Fowler colaboration folder, it was amazing. I loved it !! But $11,000 for the whole set is too much for me.

Rob,

Alan isn't selling you properly on his qualifications as host. He always has an unending supply of 12 year old at the New York knife shows. At the show this weekend, Duane Dwyer was losing his voice, so I borrowed a small plastic cup and Alan very kindly poured a shot into it, and I went over to the Strider table. I said, "Here, Duane -- medicine for your throat." He looked at it, and asked, "What is it?" I could tell by the look that he was trying to figure out if it was Nyquil.

I said, "12 year old. Courtesy of a friend out in the lobby area."

He smiled "Oh Yeah! " and down the hatch it went.

It's good to have Alan as your host in NYC, Rob.

:D

Well, someone said it was all a blur, and that's how I feel, too. Seven hours on my feet looking at knives and talking to some great people. And that was just Friday!

Spotted a bunch of BF members and shared quick stories. RL, myself and another couple shared a GREAT dinner. Robert has quite a few tales to tell of the joys of collecting 'tactical customs' in Canada, and we really enjoyed his company. It was a priviledge!

PhilL has a great kit dagger folder which he's going to have fun with. I popped a few eyeballs displaying one I finished up and he's up to the job, too!

I have some pics that I'll try to post soon, and picked up one of those Carving sets that William and Sharon Burger had finished for me. One year on order and worth every minute and penny. Pics soon enough...

That tapped me out for new purchases. But I was rich with the conversations and folks that I was introduced to and met. It don't get much better than this!

Wow, thanks for the kind words, I'm honoured! And thanks again for setting up our dinner.

Your dagger was indeed a beauty...very impressive!

Ditto for your carving set...it was special to know the story behind something that will probably become an heirloom...

But PhilL, that was my lunch money for the week!
Now I'm reduced to prowling the conference rooms for client meeting leftovers:D
