A Pack and Boots

I've pretty much stopped wearing full-grain leather boots unless I'm carrying heavy loads (40-50# or more), or in really rough rocky scree. Otherwise, I do much better in light hikers. I have a pair of the Keen Targhee II Mid that is great -- very watertight, they breathe well, and they're super comfortable (and especially good for a wide forefoot). There's no way I'd choose jungle boots over a decent pair of Keens.

For the pack, there are also lots of choices. I'd recommend trying on a range of Gregory and Osprey packs. I've got a couple of Gregorys that I love (a Z22 for fast and light dayhikes, and a Z55 that is plenty for 3 days or so backpacking). My girlfriend has a similar pair of Ospreys. Both are great -- it's more a matter of what fits best, and appeals to your needs.

Once you've made your pics, do some shopping online, and you may be surprised at how affordably you can do this.

Ive considered getting some XtraTuf rain boots for hiking in Oregon. That is what a lot of people wear around here. I will probably get something else for Hawaii. On Monday or Tuesday I will be going to REI to try on some Packs and Boots. I appreciate the help,

Thanks guys.

Save that REI card! Make some birch bark shoes and we'll make a rucksack from an old bedspread. BING! Free gear! Just kidding, my original suggestions stand. However, I am intrigued by the primitive living skills thread and will be trying to make some of this stuff just to prove to myself I can. By the way. Ask the folks at REI bout the gear your interested in, they can help guide you too. Have some idea of what you want but make sure it all feels great whatever your preconceptions are. We're all a different fit. I've tried to force some great gear on myself but it just didn't fit, so I took it back for other great gear.
