a pair of kwaikens

This time around I made two of my 5" bladed Kwaikens, in .250" O1, strong distal taper and full flat grind, with a tapered tang and rayskin under the resin soaked wrap. Both blades feature hand satin finishes on the blade, with beveled and full mirror polished spines.

I view these as defensive tools. In fact, I feel that the ONLY purpose for this knife is to stop a bad guy. If you want a utility knife, or something to use as a chopper, or you need to dice tomatoes, I make things for that.

These aren't intended for that. At all.

I've gone to great lengths to remove and reduce mass anywhere I could to make these efficient penetrators, and also as light as possible so that they'll be carried. All the time. Both of these weigh in at six ounces each, so just slightly more than your average tactical folder.

There is one minor discrepancy between the two of these, as I wanted to try something out. More on this in a bit.

Here's the first one: SOLD

The first of the pair has DARK green rayskin. So dark, in fact, that I'm hesitant to describe it as green. It was hella dark before I applied the resin, and afterward it's as good as black, for all intents and purposes. This one's overall length is 10", with a 5" blade.

The second one is where I fooled around a bit. It pushes the threshold of 'weight-to-handle ratio'. Overall length is still 10", however the blade on this one is 5.5" long, with a 4" handle. Because of the tapered tang, and the rounded shape of the turk's head knot, the base of the turk's head nestles into the hollow formed at the thumb and forefinger when you 'grip'. Do it with an empty hand and you'll see what I'm talking about. The advantage to this, aside from a slightly longer blade, is less handle to jab you in the ribs when you carry this the way I intend for you to. All the time.

Doesn't sound like much of a reduction, but I think you'd be surprised. I'm guessing it may be even more advantageous is you're a 'plus-sized' model.:) I know since I've stopped trail running and developed a pooch that these things have become more and more evident to me...:D

Here's a quick video I did displaying my intended method of carry, and my belly. Please feel free to poke fun at it - everyone else seems to enjoy it, and I'd hate to miss an opportunity to make someone happy.

Also, a shot of the spine, to show the bevel and polish:

Photographing knives is difficult enough - mirrored finishes are even worse. Hope this conveys the look, as well as the distal taper. Nothing can ever be clean enough, and no matter how hard you try, you always seem to catch something in the reflection...

BOTH $OLD, and includes shipping anywhere in the continental US via USPS. Email me and we can arrange other methods if necessary, or out-of-country sales. Paypal preferred. I'll eat the Paypal fees.

First one listed (dark green rayskin) is SOLD.

Also included with each is one of my ultrasuede-lined kydex, inside-the-waistband sheaths. The strap is missing from the each of the photos, as I'll make them just before they ship, which is also when I'll apply the final edge. I normally apply a 1000 grit 'toothy' edge to these, as I feel it works better against the materials the knife will likely encounter (cloth, flesh, leather, etc.), but I have received a few requests for my fully polished edges, and will now allow the purchaser to decide which they would like.

Thanks!

Damn nice. I certainly can appreciate the value of a good defensive carry fixed blade, hopefully your buyers can too.

Ha! No, that was many moons ago, when I was still doing chisel grinds on these... Took the pad of my thumb off while final grinding (zero ground edge - by the time you get to 400 grit on the machine, you're SHARP), and I didn't even know it was gone until I realized my thumb was sticking to the blade while I was pressing on it.
Ewwww....

Thanks for the props, guys. I've said this ad nauseum about these blades, but I personally carried one when I worked retail, every single day, ten hour days, for years. No one knew, except my employer, as it's kind of bad form to have something like this without their approval, I'd say...

too low a price, imo. But hell, if you wanna give your work away....
:)

Both are sweet Matt, and a heck of a good price too!!

Not to be a a Nitpicky Nathan or an OCD Oliver, but I do believe that the plural form of kwaiken is just kwaiken, minus the s. Example: "M. Gregory posted a pair of kwaiken for sale, but the carry video scared everyone away." :D

Yeah, I'm afraid you're right - it really should be just 'kwaiken', and I'll change it. Really can't win, though, as these are hardly any more 'Japanese' than a titanium katana is. We're really both just butchering the tradition, I think.:D

How many times have you watched that video? Seriously? ;):D

Lorien, I'm afraid you're more right than you're not... while hiking with the mastiff today, I contemplated the last time I did a price increase on these, and realized something that really throws a wrench in the works... this is the price I started charging for these knives a few years ago, WITHOUT a sheath! I'm actually losing my ass on these knives. These are the last two I will sell at this price. I really don't have any choice but to raise my prices, if only to reflect the expense of the sheath. Ah, well...

maybe the apostrophe confuses things . Kwaiken's . Are you sure ? as the apostrophe makes it possessive .

Matt,

Why are you and Joey P and RJ fans dragging me away from my beloved Forged Bowie/Fighters ? :D
These Jpz. fusion pieces are totally cool EDC concealed or visible carry blades.

I'll take this one.
Have a PM or email to you in a minute or two. :)

Doug
