A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words

You brought back a 5 year old thread just to say that? I've also got some bad news for you. CRKT's ARE cheap!

i'm a new member sorry i didn't realize it would bother anyone if i posted something in this. what's wrong with crkt's? i bought an crkt m16 about 3-4 years ago and it's taken a beating and hasn't given me any problems

i just got an emerson horseman and i really dig the knife. but it didn't lock up as tight as my crkt did and i had to adjust some stuff to get the horseman to stop rattling and the crkt was perfect out of the box

Wow, this is a thread from baaaaack in the day.

So whats the best EKI for dealing with zomie threads ....:D

Dewd---I like CRK&T knives. If you like them, that's all that matters.

Regarding the lock up, Emersons are designed to wear in. The liner will move over with use. The rattle is normal and is caused by the floating stop pin.

CRKT's are "ok" for an entry level knife but they in no way shape or form compare to an EKI.

why?

*lower quality steel in the blade.

*poorly executed liner locks in some (most?) models.

i do think they make some excellent cheap renditions of some popular customs, the kasper to name one, the M16 to name another, and they are fine for utility i suppose, but imho the liner isues preclude them from serious consideration for a SD knife.

FWIW, i personally have had liner issues with at least 3 CRKT's & i havent owned but perhaps 6 of them.

so, imho, any comparison of CRKT vs EKI is apples/green beans, completely different knives with completely different price points made of completely different materials, marketed at completely different consumers & made for (or suitable for.....)completely different things (SD vs utility).

So what would you consider the best SD knife (folder and fixed blade) thanks bro

well that depends, personally, for a folder i like my custom CQC13, i like the blade shape and its handle ergo's are good, its very secure in the hand, but others are good too, the production CQC12 is good, the production '13 too, probably my fav production is the '12 due to it being a frame lock, other good choices imho are the BM AFCK, spyderco Ti ATR, and most anything designed by bob kasper, our hands must be similar in size as anything designed by him really fits my hand well, the crawford kasper and perfigo are imho as good as anything when it comes to SD with a folder. some things to look for arre it must have a good lock and the handle must offer a good grip, if ya carry another knife for utility imho the steel doesnt matter a lot either, but the lockup has gotta be good and also the grip, other things can vary but without these 2 imho its a utility knife not a SD knife.

in a fixed blade which is only for Sd the steel used again isnt real critical as long as its at least decent, no real need for S30V or whatever, AUS8 or similar is fine, AUS6 will work, for very little $$ CRKT used to offer a design by bob kasper (which is made by al polkawski FWIW) called the companion, it had an excellent handle with a good grip, only con was both sheaths it came with sucked, but a CRKT companion(~$25) with some custom kydex (~$25) imho is a lotta SD knife for not a lotta $$, and is pretty close in dimensions and shape to the polkawski version (i have both FWIW nal's runs ~$250 or so) which is imho as good as most anything in a size which is fairly easy to live with day to day, i dont ever edc any FB with over a 5" blade, its just too much hassle and not legal in a lotta areas anyway, another good FB for SD is the bud nealy pesh kebz, i have a M2 kebz with the MASS sheath and like it a lot, the nealy amoeba is also a good one and carries well, in fact, imho most any FB by polkawski or nealy is hard to beat and they both offer good sheaths which everyone most certainly does not, and a good sheath makes all the difference in a edc FB, now if i was gonna carry just a FB for fighting i would carry my mad dog SEAL ATAK2 but its a bit large for concealed carry, or edc in anything but a military setting lol, but it would be imho an awesome SD knife i have no doubt.

a few other cheap FB's that are decent & not too expensive are the MOD razorback, spyderco perrin, spyderco lum, spyderco temperance or even some of the cold steel offerings, all good.

but for me, the '13 and the nealy kebz are my favs, and i am happy with them, i know i have tried a lot of others which i wasnt happy with, but for me those 2 are tops for edc use for SD, they both have excellent ergo's, the '13 has great lock up, the kebz has an excellent sheath, they are both made of great materials (154CM & M2), they both carry well, draw well, and cut well, like i said i am happy.

and of course, ya need some training and a 9MM or .45 is better for SD, or a pump 12 gauge lol, but folks have been carrying knives for SD for quite a while now & i dont think thats gonna change & some are certainly better in this role than others.
