A place to put my stump

I can get a redwood stump any time I want. The problem is I don't have a place to put it. Apartment living isn't conducive to chopping stumps. I need something that has a fence and doesn't share any walls. I'm looking for a house.

The problem is that when I look at a nice house for sale on a quiet street (3, 2 1/2, 2000 ft^2, small lot), the prices are usually well over $600,000:eek:. I think I can afford a little over $300,000 without going crazy and giving up all of my ~expensive hobbies:barf:.

So I'm looking for a shack in the bad part of town. On the good side, gaining a reputation as the crazy guy who throws around knives in his back yard is a good thing over there.

Until I find a place and re-evaluate my budget I'm going to be reigning in my Busse habit (even selling a few). I will bring very little purchasing power to Blade:(.

I'm still going to buy beers for any one who brings a knife cooler than my new custom to Blade. I'll have a budget for Scotch and Cigars. I'm going to pick up a sheath or two and some other doodads at the show but I'm sure there will be lots of great deals slipping through my fingers. I think I'll have enough for one Busse. Hopefully Jerry will be in a gambling mood again:D.

Good luck, brother. Wifey and I were going to sell and move out of Miami, but things here are extra bad. Oh well...it'll be a little while longer before I get out of here. On the good side, though, there's a very nice avocado stump in my backyard.:cool::D

I know what you mean man, I'm in a hard place with the funds as well.

Im looking to score a small piece of sharp/pointy INFI and get some pants for it. Also, Im going to get a sharpy/pointy piece of SR-101 too. Love that steel :)

And maybe some SR-77 is I can find something that is coated with the black crinkle coat. (I hate the DMDC finish - beadblasting)

My condolences.

I think, at one time or another, all of us guys have had trouble finding a place to put our stumps.

Gravelface once posted an x-ray of his stump, I think.

I have a small yard but we are on the verge of finding a new house.

My stump is in my basement for now. Try throwing a hatchet in a basement that has 7 foot ceilings. It's a whole different motion...Like hip firing.

Yeh, I thought this was gonna be a personal relationship thread for a second....

Or something that belonged in one of the "Community" forums....

I know when I was laid off a while back, things got "tighter", but, in paraphrasing the immortal words of the 3rd peasant, "things got bettah".

Good luck finding a place for your wood...

There are several places I could keep a stump, the problem is that I couldn't live at the same location. Unless I rent a house, I need to buy to keep the stump in a convenient location.

You could strip out an entire room of your apartment, put some indoor/outdoor carpet down, and make it your stump room. Knives could go on the walls. Stump in the middle of the room. Maybe a stump slice hanging on the wall for throwing with a little plywood behind it for insurance.

Plus, you'd get to ask the ladies, "Would you like to go back to my special room and see my stump?"

I agree that a back yard is a nice thing to have. Good luck in the real estate hunt. You won't be the only one practicing limited spending at Blade. Outside a couple/three/four-at-the-most knives that I'm hoping to see plus some sheaths, I'm there for the comraderie. Heck, I only picked up four last year, and that was enough to make me smile. Might also try to get some sheath-making supplies if they're around.

Where would I sleep?

I don't have the luxury of a two bedroom apartment.

I'm paying $920 a month and around here that's cheap.

At least I don't live in SF, a one bedroom is at least $1,500 there, with no garage (I've got a one car).

Also if I put the stump in my apartment, I would have to carry it up a flight of stairs. It took a powered stair climbing dolly to get my 300 lb safe up there, I couldn't go much bigger on the stump. If I had a back yard, my only limit is the payload of my truck and I could borrow an F-350 if I wanted more than my Ranger can handle.

Lastly my downstairs neighbors probably wouldn't appreciate chopping, and I don't know how much the floor can take.

Hey there are great things about high rents in San Francisco. For example I like collecting them.

I am with you on needing to get a house with a yard. I do have a garage with enough room for the stumps and still have room to park my wife's car and my motorcycle. But when I want to throw, I load them up in the truck, and go somewhere.
smaller sump on the larger one. the great thing about the angled cut on the top stump, it will sit on the angled side, and the big round bottom makes a great throwing target.

I believe Hogwash is experiencing the psychological phenomenon known as stump envy.

To be fair, I wouldn't mind a slightly bigger stump than the one I have now.

Yes, I have stump envy.

Once I get a backyard and a 3-4' old growth redwood stump, you'll be the one with an inadequate stump.

No man ever wants to hear the words, "inadequate stump." :(

Guyon,

I use to have a stump up in Sonoma but over the years it rotted out.:grumpy: :grumpy: It may be time to get another.

But the fun of that place is that there are a ton of blackberries and scrub oak to swing at.

I think I'll make a table top to cover my stump and keep it dry. I might even throw a couple gallons of polyurethane at it after it has dried out for a few years. That should make it last a long time.

You might get a big redwood stump but it would be too soft to envy.

You don't see top performance from a mistresses unless you have a harder wood.

Other wise just a stroke or two and she's used up you stump.  :thumbdn:

I agree that red wood is not necessarily a good thing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a red stump could be connected to overuse or (worse) an infestation of small bugs.

No one wants bugs on his stump.

I take care of my stump. I set things I want to chop on top of it.

Beating on your stump must be the reason why it wore out so quick.
