A Pole Axe is a fearsome thing!

I've often wondered why no ever mentions polearms when discussing the elimination of zombies. IMO these would be the most effective weapons, bar none.

Traditionally the Poleaxe would include a sharp spear point for stabbing a charging knight that is bearing down, but be thankful that this wasn't included. It would get in the way of chopping chores and you might stab that shrub that your wife loves. You can see why castle guards would carry such weapons. The wide arc would keep revolting peasants at a distance. They could also be swung from atop walls and down stairways when a castle was being attacked. You are right about the hammer. Traditionally you would hammer an armored knight to knock him off balance and the stab or chop on the followthrough.

You should be happy to own this. It is totally cool and much more sturdy than the reproduction pieces put out today.

I got one in the sale too and have to agree this is one badass chopper. I sank the blade into a stump and thought I would break the shaft before I got it out. I'm thinking of making two mods - grinding the hammer into a spike to cut a little weight and shortening the shaft to 4 feet.

Asian or european, a pole ax is my short range zombie eliminatin weapon of choice.

I have the Boar Spear from Cold Steel and I also have the excellent version from Arms & Armor.

The CS spear is twice the weight of the A&A and is no where near as balanced. The A&A is fast, light, and feels like a weapon, the CS is a tank and feels sluggish and unwieldy.

I also just received the A&A Hungarian Axe and it is only about 2.7lbs and very fast. It's balanced so well I can see how it was a favored weapon and the shaft is oval so it's easy to index the blade without looking. You can chop or thrust with it equally well. A&A is known for making accurate recreations of old weapons and they try to maintain the feel of the original. CS makes them to smash into trees and cars. Nothing wrong with that, but it takes away from the feel of the original weapons.

You beat me to it, I too own the A&A poleax:

As you can see there is at best a superficial resemblance to the Cold Steel one. They are totally different beasts in terms of handling. Think pinto vs corvette. Of course there is a fairly significant price differential too.

For a really powerful polearm try out the Italian Bill or Roncone

Now that thing is downright scary. It's an incredily chopper that literally disentegrates plywood targets for example. The only way I can think of to parry one is to have one of your own, or get out of the way. :)

Too large to carry I'd think. Also too slow to use against large groups of zombies, and how often are you going to find just one;)

Man, and the only weapon of this type that I've got is a CS War Hammer.
Though maybe my Fort Turner hawk counts too.

Those "Bill" pieces from A&A are freakin' intense!
And what an unassuming name...

"Oh, can I leave my 'Bill' in your umbrella stand while we have a spot of tea?"

If you like staff (i.e. Bo etc) you'll find and lot of carry-overs. The fact is that some the Medieval and Reniassance masters saw staff training as a transition to a variety of pole arms. There is a pole arms manual available on line, ARMA site I believe. Sorry can't remember the title.

i remember lynn thompson showing you how to use polearms in one of his proof dvds. a fearsome thing:eek:

to slow agaisnt groups? nah, just spin around in circles with the blade at around neck height. zombie's will just walk right into it :D

I bought a CS Assegai a couple years ago to handle the local zombie problem. I never got to use it. It just stands propped in a corner of the room. You see, just after my Assegai arrived, the governor signed into law a tax on zombies and now ... no more zombies :D
