A Pole Axe is a fearsome thing!

Is that Hungarian axe sturdy? I've always thought about buying one but didn't know if it could hold up to chopping tests and the like or was more for display

Well, it's very well made, but it's a weapon not a chopper. It weighs less than 3lbs IIRC and it amazingly fast for a big axe.

It came very sharp and I'm sure it would cut light targets, but I'm not sure what you mean by chopping tests. I wouldn't try to chop a tree down or anything for example. I'd place it in the same category as a well made sword that replicates an original sword designed to soft targets not trees.

I bought the CS pole axe as BEFORE it was discounted. I paid $89.00 if I remember correctly. :( I have been wanting the CS halbard. Did Cold Steel discontinue it? I've wanted a nice halbard since I saw one at Museum Replicas (It was a Del Tin model, much nicer than the CS model) and when I went back to purchase it, they had quit carrying it. I've been kicking myself in the butt ever since. If someone mods their pole axe please post some pics of your work. I want to mod mine as well.

If you like staff (i.e. Bo etc) you'll find and lot of carry-overs. The fact is that some the Medieval and Reniassance masters saw staff training as a transition to a variety of pole arms. There is a pole arms manual available on line, ARMA site I believe. Sorry can't remember the title.

do you have a link to the site?

I just got the Cold steel War Hammer.
For 35.00 bucks it's pretty cool.
I wouldn't chose it over a sword as a weapon but it's a good half houligan tool half weapon.

I got one of the Cold Steel Pole-Axes recently for the heck of it. The thing is a bit unwieldy, but fun as hell to use to demolish pallets, scrap boards, and other such miscellany.

The good is that, well, it is a certainly sturdy thing, especially considering it costs about as much as an ax from a hardware store and is made in Taiwan. The head is drop forged 1050, and can take abuse rather well. The axe end came with a serviceable utility edge, and the war-hammer end is cleanly shaped. The ash pole is surprisingly decent, not perfectly shaped, but straight and sturdy. The pole comes without finish, and is ready to stain or such out of the box.

Of course, there are drawbacks to the thing. While the head and shaft are rather strong, the screws holding the langets to the shaft are perhaps a bit short, because they have become loose after a few accidental impacts with scrap wood. And frankly, I am not that experienced with pole-arms and such, but even I can find it a bit lacking in handling.
Also, it is obviously is a tool of modern construction, aesthetically speaking. With the black coated, drop forged head attached to the shaft with screws, it looks rather like it came from some bizarre alternate universe Home Depot that sells pole-arms. In other words, it is ugly, and not what one might want as a historically accurate repro.

So, to sum up: you do get what you pay for here. It is certainly not top of the line, but you could easily get $30 worth of entertainment using it to smash and chop up bits of wood and assorted junk. It takes gross abuse, and looks rather ugly doing it.

Man, and the only weapon of this type that I've got is a CS War Hammer.
Though maybe my Fort Turner hawk counts too.

Those "Bill" pieces from A&A are freakin' intense!
And what an unassuming name...

"Oh, can I leave my 'Bill' in your umbrella stand while we have a spot of tea?"

1st LOL of the day. That is hillarious man!:D

It was posted on the forum that they did indeed close them out for 39 dollars. I asked Cold Steel when I placed my order for the Pole Axe and they were all long gone much to my chagrin :grumpy:
