Now I know that with a limit of only 10 there will be some missing, but please vote on the ones listed and not remind me of my age or the limits of our Poll software we have...;)

AND I know that when we talk steels/blade materials that it really varies as to application, chopper verses skinner/fine cutting chores so just give vote on your first instincts and don't try to work it out in your head the whys right now, it'll just drive you crazy!

So gut instinct, vote quickly and lets see what is on our minds when it comes to blade material!

This is a hard choice for me. If D2 was on the list I would have voted for that but 52100 and 420v are the 2 that I really like on the list. Cannot decide. Good question and should be interesting.

Instinctively I go for talonite just because I like the idea of the simplicity of the material, ie. no heat treat.

But I find myself preferring 440C for my knives because I can rel;iably do the heat treat myself.

In the final analysis however, I find myself in agreement with Roguesoul.....Ja Mon, Rosta-Frei is #1!;)

ACK...I new it wouldn't be a complete list!!!

Sorry guys about the D2 and the VG-10...nuts, drats this limited number of poll options!
BUT, I can't blame the poll options for all of it, I just plain forgot them!! might have added the D2 along with the A2 and the VG-10 not sure which area is similar?

Sorry guys...:(

MAN, I'm just going to go off and cry for a while...I'm going to turn 48 in January, now that isn't too old is it?

My apologies to all, guess I should have grouped them better and included more in each group...where did I put that rocking chair?

Did you leave it with the INFI?:(

I voted 420V, btw, for smaller knives.

I voted for ATS-34 only because Doziers D2 wasn't there. Or Vg-10 and BG42. Oh well, next poll.....

ATS give the most for the money, There is better, but it's not worth twice the cost. It's not twice as good.

Shut this thread down? Naw G2 in any poll like this you are going to miss someones steel. Like you said in your first post go with your gut and vote for what is here. I think it is a interesting question and you have some good choices.

Gary,
We're swimming in different cutlery grade steels these days. A pity the polling software won't handle it all.

Anyway, my favorites in order are:

Stainless:.........Carbon:
D-2 .................52100
VG-10 .................5160
440V ..................M2
ATS-34 ...............W2
440c ................A2

These are just the standouts. Nearly all cutlery steels have positive attributes that would make them someone's favorite for whichever application they are best suited for.:D

I find that properly forged 52100 and then 5160 (forged as well) are my two favorite steels. They take an edge beautifully, hold it well and are easy to sharpen. They are tough and strong, what more could you want in a steel. I have never had trouble with rusting because I take the time to care for them properly.

I have also had some very nice knives made of 1084 and 1095, but I do not like these steels as much. In my experience they just don't seem to stay sharp as long. Not that that is a big problem since I like sharpening a knife, but the blade will wear out faster if you have to sharpen it more.

Gary, there is a HUGE difference between AUS 10 and AUS 6.
It's really not fair to put all of those in the same category.
Also, as a knife metal, AUS-10 just isn't that common, and I haven't seen too many people comment on it.

Yep, I realize that, just trying to group Families together and was going to group all the CPM metals together as well...being limited by the set of 10 items really makes it tough and WOW there are a lot of blade material choices so a poll on ALL of them is probably not very easy to do, at least in this format, perhaps posting each favourite and doing the manual thing would work better?

My actual favorites, in order, are:

D-2
BG-42
CPM 440V
ATS-34/154CM
VG-10

We are fortunate to have so many exceptional steels available these days! :)
