Some deranged Canadian that frequents these boards decided to, in his insanity, send me a custom version of one of my grail knives - the Beer Scout. So many snatched up before I saw the listing! So many escaped me because I just didn't have the funds at the time!

Luckily, this particular Northerner has a gentle and generous kind of madness.

Behold, the beauty of the pocket-worn mesh composite covers and the patina on the pivot:

The cross-section of the mesh gives a speckled appearance, which contrasts beautifully with the brass liners and steel springs:

And now, the big reveal:

The blades are centered and almost pristine, the pull is almost effortless but not loose, the backsprings are flush in all positions, the mesh is actually metallic (not that you can see that in the pictures), and it fits -perfectly- in my watch pocket. It pushes out the watch pocket just enough that you can thumb-and-forefinger it out without any digging, but is snug enough to stay in place, even upside down (tested it!) - this was no junk drawer pass-off!

This is basically the coolest thing anyone has done or given to me, simultaneously. Super ridiculously amazing awesome. This internationally-traveled custom-made generously-given watch pocket companion is a permanent addition, destined to be there through an assortment of life events over the coming years. I'm excited to see how it wears, the character it develops, and the stories I'll be able to associate with it.

Thank you, everyone, for being so amazing. Especially one particularly cold-nosed-but-warm-hearted person whose incredible generosity has brought what is likely to be an heirloom to my doorstep.

^^ That made me chuckle :)

I'm glad it made it safely. esnyx did a great job on that one, and I'm sure it has found a great home.

What a surprise ! The custom handles really change the 'look' of the knife completely. That's what i find so surprising. Well, in addition to the kindness & generosity.
Can you tell use more about these handles ? Were they previously on another knife ? Or ?? something seems different about them.
You are a lucky man.

Congratulations on a beautiful gift, very nice. There is a lot of genuinely good and generous people here. :)

Kind thoughts your way, Mike.

Commeuppance- my gifted beer scout is in my pocket now. It brings me great pleasure and lots of utility. Use it well. Continue the spread of kindness.

Cheers.

That'd be a question for Mr. Canuck. All I know is that Esonyx apparently made the mesh himself. The history and composition remains a mystery to me.

From what I recall, esnyx made the composite material, with aluminum mesh suspended in it. It's really unique, and has a cool in hand feeling.

Haha what a humorous, enjoyable & descriptive read up Comeuppance. I'm glad to see your progression into slipjoints broaden and there are great people on the porch. I haven't stepped foot in the general discussion forum in a longgg time.

A very very nice traditional from a Great guy, Great Co., and Great touches. Fine knife, something about a good traditional makes it happen for me. TD

What a splendid gift!

Congrats, Comeuppance, on your smashing Esnyx custom Beer Scout; that's a legendary knife!!:cool:
And I guess you're not disappointed with it?? :D:D
I certainly agree with you on the permanent nature of knives gifted by BF members; for me they have enormous sentimental value!
(Here is a compliment based on my old eyes looking at some of your pics: the covers remind me of stitched leather, and I find it hugely appealing! I don't even know if there is such a thing as stitched leather covers, or whether they would even be practical, but I like the idea and look.)

Very generous act, Mike!:thumbup: As soon as I saw "deranged Canadian", I knew who was behind this. ;)
I have my own "eternal" memory of Mike. When I first joined BF, I was getting double posts about 1 out of every 3 attempts to post; as you can imagine, that was very frustrating. But Mike advised me to never use the "Post Quick Reply" button, but instead use "Go Advanced". I've followed his advice ever since, and I've never had another double post! It may not seem like much, but I'll never forget it!

Congratulations on a beautiful gift, very nice. There is a lot of genuinely good and generous people here. :)
+5K! And Ron should know, because he's one of the leaders of the "good and generous" pack!:D
